Hey guys,

Sorry been a while since Ive done the forum thing and been meaning to share with you my roof chop.

It was only meant to be a roof skin job but the rust was to far gone in the 2nd layer so had to do the old pillar chop.

before the chop, basically hit it with a hammer and used the grinder to take a look

The doner roof

I have never been so nervous in my life, once that first cut was made there was no turning back.
Me and a mate had the old roof cut off and cut the other roof to fit had it welded up within a day.

once it was welded and cleaned up, sanding and more welding and fixing anything i could find like small pin holes ect. i didnt sand the welds down that much on inside of the cab because it will be hidden anyway,
i tried to get the outside as best as i could so it wouldnt need much filler.

Then the body work

Spent alot of time on the body trying to get it as strait as i can, had my uncle come help me with a few areas as i haven't done this sort of work for 10+ years haha.
My original plan was only to do the roof skin remember, while the cars stripped i decided to do all these things while its here and everything is out, did some rust treatment in the floor and a few cuts and replated ect.
had rust below the front windscreen so i wire wheeled and treated and in a few other areas aswell.

Refurbished door hinges
Did me front door hinges, no bushings and pins, gave them a sand blast and quick paint. dont know how they will go or how long they will last.

Theres still a litte bit to do, i havent started on the front guards yet but i had Front RHS s2 guard and the left hand one was a s1. so made the s1 into a s2 haha.

Nice work man! Mine also has one of the front fenders cut to fit the side light. Just learned from your post that this difference is what people call series 1 and series 2.

Thanks Braziliany60, Yes some have the cornering light and the little indicator just infront of the front doors, where some just have the indicator, i wont be going s2 grille though might get a s1 chrome grille maybe.

so i have been slack on the updates i do apologize.

My motivation hasnt been great and havent done much for months but then i got the bug again and actually got it in primer last week.
i have done a lot of other small mods in between the body work like JRP 14in1 and also a rear tube bar but that will come later.

i decided to cover the whole patrol in epoxy to seal everything up, the bonnet has been on 3 different cars now as i found out, we had 2 shades of blue and the original color was silver as
well as the scuttle but i just used paint stripper on the scuttle because sanding that would have taken alot of time.

cheers.

Brilliant post, I have a 1997 GQ LWB thats been chopped into a Dual Cab, painter is getting ready to start the job, happy to see the job has been done in a shed, @MB, whats coming I guess to a degree. Congratulations on the roof chop, another monster job. Is this the final colour or just the undercoat?

Hey PeeBee,

Nice I'd like to go dual cab next time or even as another project one day if I get a bigger shed haha. No this is just the epoxy I'm still yet to highfill prime aswell. The color I have chosen is a dark metallic blue.
