My truck has an engine noise, it knocks, mostly noticed at idle after a long drive at sustained mid to high engine speeds (hiway), it sounds more like a rattle at 2000-2700rpm. The hotter the engine the worse it seems to be. Its faster than valvetrain noise
It sounds almost like a dud big end in a petrol engine but its not as constant through the rev's, if it was a petrol engine I would have pulled it apart by now!!
I have heard that these TD42's are a noisy engine but haven't had a chance to listen to many to compare.
Other than the noise the truck goes like a shower of sh!t, compression figures a perfect, only blows BLACK smoke at full throttle before the turbo has spooled, uses no oil and loves being revved. It has 350k on the clock.
I can't bring myself to think its bottom end noise because its a Nissan Diesel but I am sus, maybe previous owner got water in it?
