Hi, I have a '98 GU 4500 auto petrol wagon and when I start it when engine is cold it starts first go but revs at approx 1500/2000 revs for 30 seconds or so or until I put it into drive. When warm the motor starts normally. Please does anybody have any ideas? Or am I heading for the dealer??

Steve,

Has it always done it or is it a new thing.

Would it be something to do with the engine management system, giving it a quick warm up, like the old auto chokes.

My wifes Honda does a similar thing(hi idle) but not quite to the revs your talking about.

Some here will have a far better idea

I had similar with my 4.5 Gu . Cleaning the MAF Sensor fixed it on mine

X2 on cleaning the air filter and MAF sensor - I had the same problem on my TB42e only a short time back (there is a thread about it on the forum) and was fine after I did ye above.

my 4.5 does this every time when cold if you wait for it to warm up it will settle back to normal
it should be an automatic choke try this first then clean the maf sensor
