Nico

Have a 96 gq with a tb42e engine and am desperate for more power ! I have been wondering if anyone has turboed one and if so how to go about it ? How $ ? Boost levels ? Engine internals ? Lower compression level ???
Confused and frustrated any ideas or help would be appreciated : )

Welcome aboard... Drop in to our introductions section & post up an intro of yourself & a little on our Rig.
To throw a spanner in your thinking...lol... The answer is put a Ls1 in it & your power problem will be solved & it works out the cheaper way to go as well.

Welcome to the forum Nico.
How much more power do you want?
For a mild power increase a set of extractors with a 2.5" mandrel bent system will do and cost $1,200 approx.
For a major power increase these engines take nicely to being turboed. If you keep the boost low - about 7Psi and fit a big intercooler you should be right with the standard internals and compression. The turbo charger off a Falcon XR6 turbo is a good match for the TB42. You will probably need a programmable EFI computer. Budget around $6,000 for a complete turbo set up (turbo, 3" exhaust, intercooler, computer etc).
There is also the option Patch suggested of dropping in a V8. Keep an eye on Bigrig's members ride thread, we're getting ready to drop an LS1 in his GQ in a few months.

Hi Tony yeh I have herd about the turbos of the xr6 go well with the tb42e do u know wot type or turbo it is and what sort of rev range I can expect the turbo to spool and reach boost ? Another thing is my engine has just ticked ova 300k would it be worth rebuilding the top end or will low boost levels be ok ????

I've never done the turbo conversion myself so can't say for sure. The Garrett GT35/40 fitted to the XR6 boosts up from about 1500rpm (I've driven heaps of XR6 turbo's and a few F6 Typhoons) on a 4 litre motor. Fitted to a slightly bigger 4.2 litre but lower revving motor I would expect about the same. It's essential the inlet and exhaust are as free flowing as possible so the turbo can breathe and boost as early as possible. A gated boost controller will help as well even if it is still set to 7 Psi, it will stop wastegate creep.
Fitting a turbo to a 300k old engine is living on borrowed time.

Sorry for the link off site, would normally avoid it but the OP may well be right on the money with this engine ready to drop in for $3.5k

Top deal indeed mate - as you said, it comes with literally everything so no haggling done .. if it is what it is in the advert (which Paul spoke to him about and the guy appears straight up as can be), then it's a bargain as is, and he deserves the dollars he's asking for it ...
