So you think blowing an engine would get you down in the dumps but I prefer to look at it differently.
I got just under 450,000kms out of my 04 GU wagon before it detonated after nearly getting me home again.
It had zero mods until 400,000 when the injector pump died and apart from doing the pump, injectors & glow plugs, & welded intercooler, I installed a catch can and secondary fuel filter in an effort to reach 500,000kms.
Serviced from about 140,000kms at home I reckon it got treated well. With MAF sensor clean, oil & filter every 5000km, air filter at 10,000km, fuel filter every 40,000km & driveline/gearbox oils each 100,000km I enjoyed looking after it.
I don’t know what the record for bog stock ZD30 motors is, but I’m ecstatic with the great service I got for so many years out of a much maligned engine. It towed MASSIVE trailers, big boats. Did trips to all over this great land & allowed adventures too numerous to recall. I can’t help feeling a little guilty that I never fitter a pyro gauge at the very least.
So tomorrow I will remove the mighty ZD & plonk in a cheap replacement while I rebuild the original. This will give me time to rebuild it nice & strong with port/polish the head, intake & throttle body on the cards along with a 3” exhaust & full NADS suite with boost/EGT gauge. I just bought a brand new factory turbo as well so I think that with a few smart choices like an intercooler fan I can get this old troll to 1,000,000km in another 17yrs. Can’t wait for all those unchartered adventures.

Awesome SF1 Mate! [emoji106][emoji106]
I truly challenge haters too to get 1/2 million clicks out of any other brand, you’ve got a zippiest well looked after (smartly driven) donk there with by far the toughest drivetrain on the market still IMHO [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Probably nearly a record. Well done! Surely a rarity, but not heard of.... If it were me, I would convert the old GUrl with a trusty old TD42 mate if you intend on keeping the Patrol. Half a mil on a TD is considered just run in. But if you were to build a new ZD, I would go with the best of the best. Ceramic pistons etc. The ZD is a great city motor, real zippy, boost down low. I still believe they are a better city motor than the TD, but to many unreliable variants on the ZD for my liking.

Good luck.

Sorry Mark Mate!
I personally disagree, heaps and heaps of smart peddle drivers out there that don’t speak up of their 500,000km potential longevity.
Like anything, no news is good news, only hard peddle sooks complain.
A TD42-T-i whatever conversion is approximately $20k these days and useless on the beach without another $5-10k thrown at it also [emoji51]
Yes, have owned both, bog stock, and if my travel destinations of choice weren’t gnarly mountain adventures and slowly chug towing horses on weekends I’d go back to a ZD zipper for sure too! Sprock whom lives and breathes our Victorian High Country as a Top Kenworth Log Carter still runs a ZD slightly pimped to this day [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Yes that is definatly a good attitude but think I would be thinking the same, she has done bloody well for a little banger hauling a big car and they certainly do drive nice. Mum & dads ZD has just over 400 thou now, drivers like new towed all around OZ all bog stock hope that can crack 500 that would be bloody awesome but once again when it does give up shes done well the car as a whole has been super reliable for a long time [emoji106]

I failed to get it going over the weekend but I ended up swapping over my injector pump, injectors, glow plugs & AC compressor, plus cleaned up the engine bay a bit. So apart from tapping my dump pipe for a pyro gauge it’s all ready to plonk in next weekend (everything crossed)
Some more pics of adventures in this fantastic automobile.

And I disagree with you old mate. To some extent. Haha!. Its not just the usual issues with the ZD that most will hear. As a tow vehicle for a nice big caravan, they might be fine. But there is also a few "bolt on" issues that come with the trusty ZD, i.e absolutely shocking automatic belt tensioner and shithouse ECU boost control to say the least. but as a city driver, they are great. I just think personally for a vehicle that will see the elements of 4wdíng. Its not the best engine choice.

Do agree with MB with the fact you can't beat a trusty TD for chugging up steep mountain trails rock ledges and all, they are bloody good in the bush. . Do love driving the ZD tho very happy little motor . .
