Noticed some diff oil weeping from one of my swivel hubs...

Just got back from a week long 4x4 trip on Fraser Island... don’t think it was leaking before.
Had both swivel hubs rebuilt about 1.5yrs (<5k kms ago).
Assume it’s a perished oil seal. Any thoughts?

Far from a mechanic me Nowlzy Mate, but from this little iphony screen looks like you are correct, simple axle oil seal gone.
Not a huge fix, wheels/brake/stub axles off & out. Slide each axle/cv joint out and pop in a new OEM seal.
Recently bought a very helpful cheap tool from SCA for this:
https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-seal-puller-remover/417966.html
FWIW: A nearby mountain work mechanic recently suggested to me that overfilling to plug height front (not constant 4wd) diffs can put excessive pressure on our axle seals.
In saying that you mention Fraser Island which I’m assuming is still these days 80km legal high speed front 4wd diff spinning heat too?

Will just be an axle seal mate.

Thanks guys,
You maybe right about the diff oil level.
I don’t do a lot of 4wding and level is at full.
I’ll change the seal and check for any wear on the driveshaft.
Might then keep the diff oil level a bit lower and see if that helps at all with next seal.

Please do be careful though Nowlzy Mate!
I didn’t word correctly as usual above [emoji51]
At higher beach speeds stuck in 4WD you may still safely require the full housing gear oil volume for heat dissipation needs possibly?
Having driven Fraser Island several times myself many moons ago in old Landcruisers I’d pretty much leave the transfer case & hubs out at low tide for 2 hours blasting up the East highway coast. Getting on & off the orange barge from Inskip point both diffs were definitely needed and only ever levered & turned the front back on again from Indian Head up to the top.

Not quite so glamorous what with the loaded gearsack, panniers, camping equipment etc. In the days before I knew about dropping tyre pressures too so yeah I was all over the place in the soft stuff. Nightmare!! haha
