View Full Version : Snapped Fitting off radiator top tank TD42Ti

Damn I am getting so clumsy doing my own servicing. Snapped the top fitting off the radiator top tank with the 10l container of new oil as I was pouring it in.

Is this a simple fix as tapping in a brass fitting and re attaching the header tank hose or do I need to go a whole new top tank?

Quite common believe it or not, not sure how you would go with tapping it as it is under pressure, me I’d go a new top tank and put a shroud over it so it doesn’t happen again

As Stropp kindly mentions, I too would highly doubt tapping it would suffice TD42 running temps/pressures without the cap off to chugg home emergency only low pressure/heat wise could certainly do!
Stick with the OEM GU radiator IMHO, just ask your honest radiator specialist if it’s worth replacing the tank only and or possibly for an extra hundred smackers throw in a full new OEM clean as a whistle complete radiator for another decades worth of needed faithfulness [emoji106][emoji106]

I did the same a few year back and just ran a tap through it and screwed a barb fitting in with the aid of a little liquid thread tape. Never leaked once. Was actually stronger than how it was...

I stand corrected Mr Mark Mate, Well Done!
Sounds like it could be a handy fitting to keep onboard if it ever was to easily happen to us all out there.
Was it simply something like this you used to keep rolling Mate?

Exactly mate. Just can't remember the size I used. I think it was a 1/8 NPT thread with a 1/4" barb from memory. I drilled out the hole first to suit the thread I was going to tap first, just like you would when tapping a metal thread...

Maybe it is possible to solder the old fitting? Now there are plastic electrodes for various plastics. Radiator tank made of PP plastic.

SCA had a fitting on the shelf which had the right size barb for the hose and a big enough thread diameter to go into the hole. Used a 12.5mm drill to clean out the hole and then used silicone grease and the actual fitting (back and forth) to tap it out. plastic there is around 2mm thick so made sure I got 3/4 of the thread inside. Bit of thread tape and it's done.
