steering damper

Hi guys just fitted old man emu damper to my 2016 patrol,it has tapered pin on both ends.When tightening the nylock nuts up I cannot get the tapered pins to go all the way into female taper on patrol fittings,they are about 3mm proud.Does this matter.The nuts are done up very tight.Thanks.
