View Full Version : Blown up Free Wheeling Hub question

If you destroy a free wheeling hub in the bush, and remove the bits that might have broken, say still able to keep the housing and outer plate for weather protection maybe. do you still maintain drive to that wheel - i don't know, having a brain fade at the moment.

Don’t believe so Philstar?
Fortunately never busted one but believe there is a way to emergency convert an auto hub broken to manual if that’s what you’re thinking mate?

No, I only have the factory issue FWH on the GQ. I carry a spare FWH assy but was looking at a set of the drive plates as they are totally positive. Obviously the front diff would still be turning over, but this was the way with 4WD's before FWH's came in.

But also curious as with the front locker engaged, is there still drive the wheel with the broken hub?

Why don't you just strap a spare complete front diff to the roof Phil? Little bit more weight gonna matter! :trink13:

In all seriousness, It would depend on what you break in the hub I suppose. But keeping a spare FWH in the back is a good idea.

Thanks Mark, that is just plain stupid. I do recall back in the late 1980's coming across a landrover on the side of Butcher Country Track, pair of legs sticking out onto the dusty track. We stopped and the guy emerged to say he was simply changing a gearbox - yes he had a spare gearbox in the back but we can all see there is a vast difference between a LR and a Nissan. Bloody hell. Now thats something you wouldn't see everyday. Surely be worthy of pulling out the camp chair and having a beer or two watching...

Yep, he was by himself, in 40 deg heat, dust and flies and didn't want a hand, so we continued on into the Caledonia River valley and went swimming and drank beer all arvo.
