2012 Patrol turbo oil in the intercooler hose.

Hi All

Just new to this forum and would appreciate some help. I have notice oil dripping from the intercooler hose connect to the turbo...also starting to notice oil coming from the other side of the intercooler from that hose as well. Turbo is not showing or burning any smoke from the exhaust..Could the turbo be on the way out, if that amount of oil is in the air system? Any assistance would be great. 2012 3.0 litre with 101,000k...I have a catch can , luckily to have a tea spoon of oil in it between services. Exhaust manifold has been changed.....thank you for your input.

Did you change your oil or top it up recently? If the oil is overfilled, it often leads to more oil in the intake, even with a catch can.

Oil was changed , but it’s at the correct level.

It's pretty common to have condensed oil vapor in your intake/intercooler with turbo'd engines, while the turbo spools up the crankcase breather is under vacuum.

What type of catch can do you have? You should be getting a lot more than a teaspoon between services.

If its the Roo Systems catch can. Theres your issue. Their can doesn't have a filter. Just baffles. Useless. I also noticed in their Youtube clip they stole pics, that I took years ago of a clogged intake system and had them on my eBay store, before I sold it. Not that it matters. Their can I wouldn't trust.
Good way to tell actually.
remove the tube from the catch can to the air intake. if theres oil in there, the can is not doing its job. If its clean, it is. Then move down the line, to the turbo. remove the outlet pipe from the turbo to the intercooler. and look down into the turbo. if the turbo has blown a seal, there will be oil in there. Usually it will be fairly dry. If you tow a lot there may be more oil than normal too.

Thanks for the information. If the turbo has done a seal, would it be better just to get replacement or re kit. And if it’s cheaper to replace what brand turbo should I get...I personally I’m leading to the turbo as the origin of the problem.

Ive never opened up a variable vane turbo so I'm not sure. If you were to buy a new turbo, don't buy the cheap ebay chinese turbo's. you will regret it. Get OEM or talk to GCG Turbo's or someone with a good reputation in selling them. As for it being the turbo. I'm doubtful it is this, pretty much unheard of for these to blow a seal. Happy to be proven wrong though. good luck.

Thanks...I decided to take inlet hose from the head to the catch can this afternoon and run into a coke bottle...the engine was clean with very little blow-by. In fact it was very clean. What I notice that there was a teaspoon of oil sitting on the turbo just below the intercooler hose. Now I clean this up with degreaser 80 k/m ago....it appears that the oil is draining back down from the intercooler hose...hence my thoughts it’s a seal on the turbo. And agree with you, I will never by Chinese products every again....eBay rubbish.
