So I finally got around to making my custom flares and mud flaps, I am happy with the job but it didn't end up as neat as I wanted it, I was told that garden edging was a good idea, but no one told me how hard it is to apply.

The photo is in the other post, I had a senior moment and posted my response to this one, which is a duplicate, however I was also trying to fit my face mask at the time and found typing and seeing thru the mask and the plastic bucket may have been the root cause to my error - Stay safe and please accept my apologies. Good night to all, assuming it is night at the moment - cant tell as the bucket is black and very big with wheels - yes I am using my recycling bin as we are being encouraged o not fill up land fill allocations - perfect environmentally responsible action.

I used garden edging on mine and it turned out great...until summer last year where the sun warped the shit out of them lmao. I actually saw a trick that I’m going to try eventually that looked great and keeps the shape of the edging.

Using a thin rigid plastic board (like a bread board) about 3/4mm thick you cut out little rectangles. Long enough for one end to bolt under the guard to the original flare holes and then another hole on the outside edge of the plastic tab to attach the garden flare. It’ll look like about 8 or 10 tabs hanging out of your guard once the tabs are bolted up. Then you bolt the garden edging to the top of each tab (using allen key stainless bolts looks great and professional btw). Not only makes them sturdier but also helps them keep their shape.

How do they hold their shape at speed? Are they strong enough to hold the original shape, or return to the intended shape? I like the look and think they would look fine also under a set of scrub rails. Certainly a lot easier on the pocket than the Kut Snake alternative.

I still had to work out how I wanted to shape the front, but they are hard plastic so quit ridged and will stand up to speed, I was talking to a guy and when I said to him that I wanted the garden edging as a cheap alternative is case I rip them off, and he said you will not ripe them off because on his it bent the guard before ripping the edging off, but all this is useless now because even though I checked with my engineer about what is allowed to be used for your flares, what he didn't tell me is that the edges have to be rounded so if I hit someone it will not slice them if I side swipe them, so after buying all my shit and spending 2 days chasing and doing the job it is not legal, WTF that is why I rang him to make sure it was legal and not to double handle well that want to hell didn't it,so all that money and time is lost.

If it was me, I would probably just add a 25-40mm radius to the front leading corner where they tuck into the bullbar, and then take a sanding block and say coarse sandpaper and run along the edge of the flare and break the corner, follow it up with some fine sandpaper for cosmetic effect. I mean you may never get picked up, and if you do I guess worst case is a small fine and take them off - would think they would be more foced on you having the flares to stop the debris flick than the radius on the edges, unless you are going to put it thru an engineering process.

A long time ago, I wanted to do something similar. I also thought that taking a few mm off the edge and splitting a bit of rubber hose to glue on to it.

Well I had the fantastic idea of putting pinch weld on the side problem solved,but the engineer bailed on me saying that he can no longer advise me remotely he said he can only say yes or no when he sees it in person that doesn't help me because he isn't that close and I can not afford for it not to pass the first time, that is way I was double checking stuff, so after all of that I decided it wasn't worth it not passing so I thought I would go and buy the proper stuff and wouldn't you have it they are out of stock ffs.8156281563 well what is wrong with that, I was told to get a pool noodle and run it down the side and that will similat a person's body, well I haven't used the noodle yet but I ran my fingers up and down fast and nothing happened to them.

I did similar with my garden edge flares when i found out about issues with them possibly cutting pedestrians etc (like if you got hit by a Patrols flares that would be the worst issue you’d have hahaha).
I ended up just going over all the flares edges with a little Hot Devil blow torch and smoothing them flat with my finger and some water (to cool my finger lmao). Next time I’ll probably just use a smooth file.
I’ve rubbed my hand fast back and forth into each flare and there is no way they’ll cut anyone or anything.

Bloody coppers they are so annul in QLD, I was at a border stop today in NSW and he said if he wasn't border stopping he would fine me and became a smart ass and called his mates over saying look at this shit, you would think that he was the engineer they way he was carrying on, so even if the engineer did pass my flares the copper would fine me because he knew better then the engineer,he completely dismissed what I was trying to do he complained about the wheel poking out from the back then bitched about my attempt to cover over the front wheel, you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't, I sware he hates 4x4 drivers and will find anything to pick on, well it is not worth dealing with idiots like him and failing my engineering check so I will be ripping off all my hard work and money and go buy the so called proper and more expensive rubber flares, now I have to pay more money to get them because everyone seems to be out of stock.

I don't know about the 'engineering' aspects in NSW/QLD, but if a MOD is assessed and passed by a Vic VASS engineer, the police can't challenge it. If the MOD is signed off by an 'engineer' not a VASS engineer, the police can challenge it. Anyway you did you best and it looked good. I actually thought you were going to do the rears as well as the tyres were clearly projecting past the factory flare? I guess its either kut Snake or the range of rubber flexi flares?

If you're going to go with the rubber flares and can't find stock then try roadrunner offroad here in Vic. They are good quality, great price and they'll ship them up to you (virus free).

I was only going to do the rest once I knew that it would pass engineering other wise it would be a wast off time and I had a feeling it wasn't going to pass such tight wodes.

Ok a continuation of the flares saga,this is what I accomplished today there's still work to be done like getting new longer wire I had to use the old one for now, I am not sure how to finish the front of the flare yet because before it was just plastic which I could cut down and shape.

I have rock sliders on my Patrol but I think there also was a hole in the lip from the old mud flaps or something, it is easy enough to drill a hole to put your chain on, oh yes and there is all so now I am thinking of it big hole in the vehicle under bracing you can use sorry it is a very late response.

Sorry about the late response I changed phones and didn't get around to putting the forum on to get notifications, I went to Bunnings and got similar size wire to the old stuff and threaded it through and it gives you a nice curve or what ever shape you want, in hind sight I would of preferred a stiffer wire through the flare but so far it is going alright and it isn't hard to put back in to shape,oh one trick is put silicone spray on the wire and it slides in nicely.
