View Full Version : another MQ patrol owner from Bray Park,Queensland-Kenny2551

hi guys .Ibought a MQ awhile back.It's an 81 model,not registered (Yet)have been doing a lot of rust repair and it is nearly up to paint stage.I noticed one problem with the heater -it has been disconnected.I am assuming that it leaks.I have been trying to get the heater box out to repair/replace the core.I've got it loose under the dash,just can not get it out.Dunno if anyone else has had this problem but any advice would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Nissans Nut House Kenny, glad to have a new MQ dedicated member. I own an MK. Check out the MQ?MK members thread. OK here it is straight from Manual(Gregorys)

1. Disconnect negative battery terminal
2. Drain the cooling system(drain it from radiator)
3. Remove the instrument cluster
4. Remove the heater control assembly
4a. remove the heater control knobs by pulling them off their levers
4b. remove the glovebox lid hinge retaining screws, open the glovebox and disconnect the retaining cable by removing the nut inside the glovebox. Remove the glovebox lid from the dash panel.
4c. remove the ashtray by sliding it out while pressingthe spring clip on the left hand side.
4d. remove the ashtray slide mount by removing its screws.
4e. remove the heater control facia panel retaining screws from underneath and at the side of the facia panel.
4f. slide the facia panel slightly forward unti acess can be gained to the panel light.Detach the light from the facia panel and remove the facia panel from the dash panel.
4g. remove the screws retaining the heater control panel to the dash. Note that two of the screws are hidden. Mark the position of the air control cable with quick drying paint to aid installation.
4h. disconnect the air control cable from the heater unit by removing the spring clip from the heater unit and manouvring the cable off the end of the lever.
4i. mark the position of the temperatures contro link as an aid to installation. Loosen the screw that retains the temperature control link to the lever and slide the link from the lever.
4j. reach throught through the ashtray mount position and disconnect the connectors that supply power to the heater control fan switch, the light and the micro switches on air conditioned vehicles.
4k. slide the heater controls forward slightly to gain access to the fresh/recirculate cable clip. mark the position of the cable with quick drying paint to save time during installation.
4l. remove the clip and manouvre the cable from the fresh/recirculate lever.
4m. remove the heater controls and cable from the dash panel

Installation is reversal

5. On models equipped with radioor radio cassette and clock, remove remove the unit using the following procedure:
(a). Pry out the trim pieces from the top of the radio surround to gain access to the retaining screws.
(b). remove the screws from the top and the bottom of the radio surround. Remove the radio surround from the dash panel.
(c). Mark which holes the radio to dashboard brackets are in ((there are 2 sets) and remove the bolts.
(d). Disconnect the wiring connector and the aerial from the back of the radio and remove the radio unit from the dash panel.
6. Remove the centre vent surround panel screws, bring the centre vent forward and disconnect the wiring to the cigarette lighter and hazard warning switch. Remove the centre vent surround panel.
7. Remove the nuts and spring washers from the passenger grab handle, access is through the glovebox opening.
8. Remove the screws retaining the top of the glovebox lining and catch to the dash panel.
9. Pry out the plastic plugs and inserts retaining the bottom of the glove box lining to the dash panel.
10. Manouvre the glovebox out of the dash panel aperture.
11. Pry out the plastic plgs and inserts retaining the dash panel trim to the dash panel. Note that one plug is hidden on the inside at either end.
12. Remove the screws retaining the instrument cluster and surround panel support bracket to the dash panel and remove the bracket.
13.
Manouvre the dash panel trim off the clips along the windscreen base and out of the vehicle.
14. Remove the screws retaining the demistr ducting to the top of the dash panel. Remove the demister ducting.
15. Working above the dash panel, remove the bolts retaining the dash panel to the supports. Lift the dash panel slightly and disconnect any wiring that may be attched to the dash panel.
16. On vehicles that may be fitted with air conditioning, remove the nuts and bolts retaining the evaporator assembly to the bulkhead. Allow the evaporative unit to remain in position.
17. Working in the engine compartmentremove the heater hoses from the heater pipes at the bulkhead. Using a blunt instrument push the heater pipes grommet through the bulkhead towards the inside.
18. Working below the dash panel remove the nuts and bolts retaining the heater unit to the bulk head and manouvre the unit free of its ducting and out of the passenger compartment.

Installation is reversal you may require assistance when relocating grommet in bulkhead.
