Hows everyone coping with this Pandemic, Im in a 6 week lock down being in a hot spot and victoria.
Starting to think this is getting very serious, the Spanish flu from 1919 claimed over 20 million lives.
To everyone stay safe , heed social distancing, wash your hands etc.
we'll get through this if everyone does the right thing, but some ppl are bulletproof and spoil it for everyone else.
Plenty to watch on Netflix ha ha ha stay safe everyone

I'm in WA/Perth and working in the Pibara, I have police clearance to travel to work and am lucky to be deemed to be offering an "essential service". We seemed to get on top of it as far as I know. I think trying to restart the economy in the south east was not the best idea at the time, I appreciate the western Australian government keeping the boarders shut. I feel for those many souls just trying to survive over east, particularly many of my extended family.

This pandemic has only made my work more busy. And the roads to and from work sooo quiet. That busy we've had record month after record month. No lock down for me. I have to be at work.

We have been put on job keeper as of the start of this week. Was a 4 day week (10 hour day) now 3 days and one annual leave to make up the same pay. They are only paying the difference between the $750 and what we would normally get for 3 days. I wouldn't call my work essential, but I can't do it from home.

What really pissed off everyone was that we were flat out pushing jobs out the last 3 months. Making record every month working ot all while they were pushing jobs forward, right into the week before end of financial year. Then it's sorry guys but work just isn't there at the moment.

Bullshit. The prick (CEO) has filled his pockets with he's eofy bonuses. Even now the 3 days are full he has just adjusted the numbers to suit 30 hours of work and he's getting 3 days of production for a tiny amount of wages.

Only plus is now it's a 4 day weekend.

Really I shouldn't be complaining, I've still got a job, getting the same $$$ and my wife is still working as normal.

We have been very lucky. Both my work and my wife's work has been crazy so my hours haven't been effected and wife is back working 5 days a week now.
I truly feel for the people who have lost their jobs by no fault of their own.

Sadly a lot of busines's wont survive this second lock down.
Some are decades old family run busines's.
It funny how the mega rich are so devastated sitting in
their $4mil houses , my heart goes out to them.
Pissed off all the money raised for the fires is still locked up
greedy greedy greedy. You just need to watch the adds on tv
where ppl have jumped on the band wagon and asking for donations.
Think the rant is over.

I'm a Full-time Firefighter here in Sydney and run my Own Business as a Event Medic and First Aid Trainer.

Fire Brigade wise, because our Service is a Essential Service, we are restricted in working a 2nd Job, to the point that the Service can dictate to us to stop working a 2nd Job under a State of Emergency to ensure we are available for our primary job as a Firefighter. The Department instructed us to minimise contact with members of the Public in our Work Role and encouraged us to do so in our Social Life side.

We did hear COVID-19 had forced the temporary closure of 3 Stations for a couple days due to COVID-19 Scares. The Department would Stand Down all 4 Shifts (24 Staff over 4 shifts) while the stations underwent deep cleaning and the all clear was given.

Late March as COVID-19 hit, many of our Station's Call Rate to assist Ambulance Calls went up somewhat, with one Station in a COVID-19 hot area the Station went from 2 or 3 Assist Ambulance Calls a Month to about 9 Assist Ambulance Calls in a single shift. Many of our Station's were runing short of Medical PPE by mid April.

Funny how things go, with the initial out brake of COVID-19, most stations had an increase in their Call Rate, but as the Lock Down got into full swing with a lot of people working from home and minimal people on our roads . . . . by mid April most stations had seen a drop in Automatic Fire Alarm Calls, Grass and Bush Fire Calls and a Drop in Motor vehicle Crash Calls.

I was also lucky, late March I returned to my Base Station to cover Firefighters who would be on Annual Leave over April and May, my Base Station is quiet at the best of times and we have a Primary Appliance Manned 24/7, and a Light Tanker only Manned on High Fire Danger Days, and due to all our travel restrictions many Firefighters requested change of Annual Leave, so we had a Heap of Spear Firefighters around so our Light Tanker was manned each shift, and being the only Light Tanker Driver on Shift . . . . over a 8 week period I didn't Turn Out to a single Call.

I came off my last shift on the Morning of 8th June and started 5 Weeks Annual Leave, which by this time NSW Travel Restrictions started to ease, which allowed me to Travel up North to visit my 85 Year old Father for a week. since visiting my Father, I've been out 4WD'ing and Fishing with my Son a couple of times with him being on forced Annual Leave from his work, not from COVID-19 but the fact he hadn't taken Annual Leave for 2 years.

With my Event Medic and First Aid Trainer Business side of things . . . everything went dead, no Events, and training . . . . went from 2 to 4 training sessions a week to next to none through April and May, with revised training sessions starting late May where we started doing 1hr assessments only sessions with clients who still needed vital training done.

The upside, the free time as allowed me to finish the setup work I needed to get done on my Patrol, so apart from a rear step and making up a Roof Ladder . . . the Patrol Setup is where I'm happy with it.

Hehehe... I guess thats what happens when a Sewing Machine is 1/2 the price of a pack of Single Use Face Masks.

On the upside a lot of Wood Ducks I have met do look a lot better the more their face is covered.

Wood Duck (n) affectionate term for people who have the unfortunate affliction of coming from Victoria (see also 'Danistan' and Peoples Democratic Socialist Republic'.
Becoming more common in useage now that Mexican in relation to Victorians is considered racially offensive and degrading to real Mexicans

I've not been affected financially and my job is secure I'm pretty sure. I'm actually doing a little better $$$ wise as I do more work from home so my expenses have dropped but income has remained the same.

I really feel for everyone who has lost work from this and all those locked inside 4 walls. My kids have been affected, one is a muso, so no work at all and no support, but he's been very lucky and picked up some labouring work. The other is locked inside those 4 walls, but has steady work from home.

I'm beginning to suffer from mild survivor guilt, seeing so many people put into great difficulty through no fault of there own.

Things in society are going to have to change from here on.

How often is it updated?
A quick manipulation in excel shows a total of 5743 cases for Victoria
Herald Sun currently reports 5936 cases.
Would have thought the media would have this information............maybe they are not allowed to report this.....
Unfortunately the majority is in the north west/west

I know that all employers don't want to shut down and probably most employees too, But in my case we fall under transport equipment manufacturing. How is a bus seats a permitted (essential)worker. We also do all the seating for the new and refurbished trams and vline. Which (I think) because they're government contracts they continue and we need to supply them, it's a domino effect and it's not what Dan is telling us.

Yeah we are just going on as pretty much nothing has happened. Apart from wearing a mask the whole day. We are a major supplier for the Public transport, heavy transport, mining, construction, earthmoving, generators, fire pumps etc etc. If anything this pandemic has made us busier. Im just waiting for it to all stop for us but it doesn't look like it yet.

I wish everyone all the best for the times to come. This is certainly one year, no one will ever forget.

If any fire pumps should happen 2 fall off a back of a truck in your pandemic let me know... *L*

I think people are concentrating on health issues ATM, but when the financial side of this bites, you'd better know how to swim. The guy on the news last had a graph showing % of businesses closed due to COVID. The highest outside Vic was 16%, in Vic it was 90%.

Mark my words. No pun intended.

Last restriction lifts, people got complacent too much and too quickly. As if the chinese virus mystically vanished and was no more.
This time around when the and if things ease up, people will be complacent AND pissed off, over it, there is a lot of tension etc... So, the ricochet effect will hit back hard.

The important thing is that we sneak a trip or two up north during the lull.:drunk:

I’m amazed how many people locally are not wearing masks, or have them under their chin. See heaps walking around the lake and gardens and no way known are they exercising. The lifting of some restrictions regionally has thrown social distancing out the window, and no limits on the number of contacts.
Friends in Daylesford are absolutely crapping themselves that restrictions will be lifted soon, local market on the weekend was overrun with visitors. Police ran the number plate recognition vehicle through the car park and streets, apparently a lot of people will be getting a please explain or fine.
Unfortunately the ring of steel is a little porous if you know a few local roads.

It’s a massive worry for sure.

Brissieboy

It seems that there is no way of stopping this until short of an effective vaccine and a mass inoculation programme.
When you think about it - this whole mess started because just one person got infected. While getting numbers down to single digits might sound good, it is almost certainly going to bloom again. There are too many people out there who just don't care.
But there is some good news: it appears that the virus cannot spread at an AFL finals game - at least at the 'Gabba in Qld. 25,000 expected, but I can only have 10 in my house and those 10 need to keep their distance.

My opportunity with BHP turned into a horse race with the lowest cost resource winning - surprising strategy from 'The Big Australian', but their call. Subsequent to this the mine site rang today to confirm they need me back on site asap - after sitting around for 7 months in Melb., where is no demand for my skills. The issue for me is that due to rigid isolation protocols in QLD, political or not, I have to isolate in a Govt nominated hotel for 2 weeks, then to site for a two week roster and then 1 week off - but cannot leave QLD - so may miss Xmas all together, first Xmas with the new grandchild. My situation is pretty tame compared to some but I might not be back for 6 months - who knows when the borders will re-open. Covid restrictions have to be rigid because of the few 'free minded individuals' believe they don't need to take the risk seriously. Being separated from my family for an extended period is not my choice, but these are the rules, so I follow them,. yet some can't even wear a damn face mask for a couple of months , when in public space without feeling their liberty is being impacted - harden up.

No one has a manual to follow for this. When was the last pandemic that hit Australia, AFAIK it was AIDS. But the victims of that pandemic could be identified, it was a few particular demographics. This pandemic affects everyone.

There is no guide to follow, there is no past experience to look back on. What is the most precious resource? Life is. What's the greatest service a Government can offer? Protection to the people it governs.

I don't understand how anyone can be said to be doing a rotten job, or doing the wrong thing, when it's never been done before and there is no precedent, no instruction to follow.

What the worst outcome any of us could suffer from this pandemic? You or someone you care about losses their life. If that doesn't happen then you're winning the battle, everything after that can be rebuilt, rebought, relearnt, re everything.

I was amazed to read that when the Spanish flu occurred in 1918, influenza hasn't been identified and wasn't until the early 1930s. A human influenza virus was not isolated until 1933.

In 1918, as scientists had not yet discovered flu viruses, there were no laboratory tests to detect, or characterize these viruses. There were no vaccines to help prevent flu infection, no antiviral drugs to treat flu illness, and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections that can be associated with flu infections.

Bill Gates warned that the world wasn't prepared for the next outbreak back in 2015.
https://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates_the_next_outbreak_we_re_not_ready
Governments didn't take notice then and now they are having to fly by the seat of their pants.

I gotta say that I'm pleased that now we are not seeing 500+ infections per day in Vic that we saw early August.
We're heading in the right direction, but from what we're seeing in other countries, with little control measures in place, it could easily go the other way.

Regardless of making the midnight deadline crossing last night before celebrating NYE countdown all Victorians still must get Covid tested and self isolate until negative results are returned.

IMHO the hysteria is about the dickhead pollies, drop kick rules and inordinate costs and not the disease itself which is understandable with stupid rules like those above.

Scenario;
Two Vic families are holidaying and they have similar close contacts, attend the same venues and do similar activities.
Family One get back in prior to 23:59 31 Dec and self isolate, get tested and 2 days later are negative so are free to leave home isolation
Family Two get back in prior to 23:59 01 Jan and self isolate, get tested and 2 days later are negative BUT must stay home isolated for a further 12 days

Now, I'm all for a managed isolation on return policy but what's the difference?
Did the extra day after 31 Dec mean the 1 Jan 2021 Rona version can trick the test now?
Why can someone who tests neg on 1 Jan mingle with population but another who test neg on 2 Jan cannot and has to remain isolated?
Is it not equally likely that any member of either family may test neg but then "acquire" the Rona?
If it isn't how is it that only members of family 2 can return a neg and get the Rona in the next 12 days but members of family 1 cannot?

No wonder everyone busts a gut to beat the 31/12/20 deadline, missing it will mean potentially losing thousands of dollars in income etc

It is totally Bananas ET Mate!
My daughter and I arrived home at 11:30pm last night with only my licence and online permit being visually glanced at, never recorded crossing the river at Tocumwal prior to the first deadline.
We’ve done everything right this morning and patiently sat in a drive through testing que on the other side of town for nearly three hours and within seconds after being tested my phone pings with a “thank you” and linky to follow:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/01/5.jpg
Within the linky (which I can only assume requires updating) it appears to state that as we don’t have any symptoms at all we are now free to roam?
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/01/6.jpg
We’re so confused with what to do with ourselves?

Also can’t understand how they are going to enforce the hundreds if thousands more still out on the river without any internet/phone coverage in many known areas along there.
As of midnight tonight if you emerge back onto the grid to cross on say Sunday as many do will they just force them all to park their rigs in a paddock and shuttle bus them into a city hotel?
Surely that won’t happen and surely there’s not enough certified Dan hotels down in the city?

Breaking News...

After extensive negotiations between Mark the Messiah, Despot Dan and the Rona Virus the Rona has agreed to households being neutral ground and will not to infect WA residents who harbour Vic refo's.

As per the latest from the WA Gov Covid directions and FAQ's - 1200 hrs 3/1/21:

Q. I’m a West Australian, but have had family/friends stay with me who have recently travelled from Victoria. Can I go to work?

A. Yes. Other household members, not subject to self-quarantine Directions, can go about their normal routine including going to work (this includes health care workers).

AT GROCERY STORE:
Me: Why is there plastic on the payment keypad?
Cashier: to protect people from Covid.
Me: but isn’t everyone touching the plastic keypad the same way they would the regular keypad?
Cashier: no words. Confused look.
Me : Why Dont you pack the grocery bags anymore?
Cashier : Because of covid 19 to reduce the spread of catching or spreading the virus.
Me : But a shelf packer took it out of a box and put on the shelf, a few customers might of picked it up and put back deciding they Dont want it, I put it in my trolley then on the conveyer belt, YOU pick it up to scan it. But putting it in a bag after you scan is risky?
Cashier: no words, confused look
AT DRIVE-THRU:
Server: (holds a tray out the window with a bag of food for me to grab)
Me: why is my bag of food on a tray?
Server: so I don’t touch your food because of Covid.
Me: Didn’t the cook touch my food? Didn’t the person wrapping my food touch it and then touch it again when placing it in my bag? Didn’t you touch the bag and put it on the tray? Didn’t you touch the tray?
Server: no words. Confused look.
In SOCIETY:
Society: If you cough or sneeze do it in your elbow or sleeve. Dont shake hands or hug anyone or you will spread the virus. To greet people do an elbow tap instead.
Me: Elbow tap? Isn't that where you tell people to sneeze or cough? into their elbow? Now you want people to tap each other with that elbow. Wouldn't it be safer to sneeze into elbow and shake hands like we did before Covid
AT RESTAURANT:
Hostess: ok, I can seat you at this table right here (4 feet away), but I will need you to wear a mask to the table.
Me: what happens when I get to the table?
Hostess: you can take off the mask.
Me: then it is safe over there?
Hostess: yes.
Me: are those fans blowing above the table? Is that the air-conditioning I feel? Is the air circulating in here?
Hostess: no words. Confused look.
SOCIETY
You are not allowed to stand and drink at the pub or bar, you have to sit down. But at the shopping centre you are not allowed to sit down, all the chairs are roped off.
Who thinks this stuff up?
Life is hard for logical people right now. We are being raised without the ability to process and execute logic.

I've been coughing/sneezing into my elbow ever since I saw it on Mythbusters.

With all this social distancing and sanitizing, I've still caught about 987 cold viruses this past year. Sometimes two at the same time.

Sucks for those on holidays but double sucks for nsw border small businesses already bleeding out their arses like many small businesses. Moama became a ghost town overnight and small businesses were given instant hernias. For what? Nothing it seems. Politicians/beaurecrats fair dinkum don't actually respect how small businesses fund their covid-period PAY RISES. Don't even get me started.

Immune system boosting is all well and good, I think that's what stops Covid (if that's what you're getting at). I just bought......

The majority of people who are dying from it are people with underlying issues. By all means, we should try to eat things that help boost our immune system (it’s not gonna stop you from getting it. But those with healthy immune systems can battle it better and survive it) hence the government's approach to wearing masks and social distancing.

So, back from the mine in NW QLD and a vast difference in Covid response up there.

1) I was covid tested after arriving on site the second day after the alert for the outbreak that closed the QLD border. The company I work for purchased a rapid test machine for the Mt Isa hospital, and I was able to get a rapid test done to confirm I was negative, result in 3 hrs.
2) Strict covid distancing, hygiene control 24hrs/day at the mess, clear traffic paths etc, no cross contamination points etc.
3) before leaving qld I got my Vic entry pass and have to wait a week for the QLD re-entry pass.
4) standing at the gate waiting to get on the bris/melb flight, at least a dozen people running around, flapping arms etc becuse they didn't have the pass, takes about an hour to come thru. So they had to make a decision to fly or not - remember its essential to have one!
5) walking to the gate to Melb, there were long lines of desks and glass barriers and police everywhere, every passenger coming from Vic was screened, no exception.
6) arrive in melb, out thru the door into the arrival lounge, one dopey looking dude standing there, welcoming people, had a DHS shirt on, no one around to check passes, I wasn't challenged, absolute joke. This govt has a lip service press conference mentality - tell the world how good we are controlling and then do bugger all. Man alive, if this is the standard this is going to be here for a very long time. NOT HAPPY

Yep, just about every time they have problems with this monitoring stuff, I yell at them and wonder how, they can't just think of this or that, it isn't rocket science, it's not even science, it's called common sense.

But it's the public service, stuff will get done during business hours, outside that you may have trouble. Take that commission into the first Hotel outbreak. Apparently no one told anyone to use private security, no one at all, they just turned up and everyone went with that. Someone did say yes to private security, but they said it face to face outside in the street & everyone that knew about it lied during the hearings.

Ate least where not in the USA.

Until, somehow , there is a crack down on the ones running around while they're sick, we're doomed. A fair chunk of the new cases have been unwell, and going around the suburbs like business as usual, and only decided to fucking get tested when they become really sick. By then, if they're positive, it's check mate for everybody they've been around... It's the primary reason why we're in this shit now.
But nothing has/is been done about it. The sympathetic bleeding hearts society we live in is flawed. With everything people like that have caused, there is no fine/charge against that... Yet I'm not allowed to visit my mother 2 streets away without breaking the rules/being fined.
If you're crook, stay the fuck away form everybody no matter what you think youve got. How difficult is it to understand that....
While getting diesel before the bloke behind the counter was like death warmed up. Watery eyes, coughing and splattering, I can just about see shit oozing down inside of his mask. Nearly passed out while paying from holding my breath until i walkd out...

An article from the very serious publication The Betoota Advocate

Nation Tunes Into Merlino Press Conference To Learn Which New Way Victoria Has Shit The Bed This Time

When Acting Victorian Premier James Merlino speaks, the nation listens.

As the defacto leader of the city-state of Melbourne, it is his responsibility to inform the rest of the country how and when Victoria has shit the bed.

Recently, it’s been several times a day.

Speaking to the media this morning in Melbourne, Merlino had the grim duty to explain the repeated failings of the Federal and his own state government.

“Well, turns out a few of those spicy coughs we thought we had were just like the run of the mill colds or something,” he said.

“Which is a bedshit and on behalf of Victoria, I’d like to apologise to everyone, especially Queensland, for dropping the ball again. But as the leader of the bedshit capital of Australia, it is my unique responsibility and mine only to take charge of said bedshits and make sure they keep happening without any real explanation,”

“My government will continue to work closely with local health authorities to find new and creative ways to shit the bed. I know the rest of the country is counting on us but as Victorians, we can’t promise anything.”

More to come.

Again. Lost for words. Just bloody dumbfounded with the selfishness and ignorance of people. This engagement party thing really has my blood boiling, to the point I came home this Arvo, setup my punching bag I haven't used in 5 years, and boxed for a solid 10 minutes to down with the sickness and system of a down. The fact I only had one glove as I found out the dog destroyed the other one didn't even stop me just wrapping my other hand and going to town. Farken fuming.

Here I was stupidly thinking we were smarter here in Vic... Clearly some are not, I wouldn't be surprised if we're not at 100 cases by the end of the week.

Youse have got it all wrong! Plassy mozzed us with this meme:)

I'm almost too angry to type tonight. But honestly what do you expect from society these days after 30 years of positive reinforcement theory - people being told you can do no wrong, your opinion is all that matters, you deserve it because you're worth it, everybody gets a medal, there are no losers. When I was a kid I had great parents who always gave me opportunity, encouraged me, never abused me even when I failed, but was also told at times children are to be seen not heard, behave when you're told to, don't be rude. We grew up instinctively to toe the line when told, to respect authority but not be afraid of it. But not for the last few decades and people are surprised when selfishness rules? We sowed entitlement into general society some tome ago and now we bear its fruit.

Edit: Oh PS, I'm no fanboy of Dan Andrews either, quite the opposite actually, but I'm vaccinated and follow the lockdown rules when I'm subject to them (currently free), QR code every time I go somewhere and wear a mask in public. Probably about as much as I can do to help out just now. And yes I am hurt financially big time due to lockdowns. Self employed, wish I was a public servant getting work from home bonuses and annual pay rises during all this shit.

I'm not afraid to say I think the only reason we are in the position were in is because of Dan Andrews. This villification of someone who is only just doing their job, with no precedents set so essentially having to make it up as he goes in my opinion is so short sighted. Mark McGowan has been incredibly tough on all covid related matters and look where that has got them... They are covid free for the moment and almost able continue with their lives mostly as normal. I know politics is not ideal here, I'm just saying personally I wouldn't judge you for having an opinion on Dan, and yes it's shit you've lost work mate, but I can hardly believe that is what the government intended or wanted to happen in the first place.

I've seen it said before but I'll say it again, there is no way any of these state or federal leaders envisioned everyone, including themselves being in the position within their term, no person in their right mind would put their hand up for that role, so I think all of them are doing what they can. I do think NSW should have been tougher from the start, but I have lived in Sydney and know what Sydney is like, regardless of any circumstances there is garrunteed to be someone not happy in Sydney and Gladys was just trying to please the popular vote, not the correct one.

Ones the parent that doesn't want to smack, willing to talk ya through it and it'll be alright...
The other...you'll do as ya told, eat what ya given cause that's the way it is....
From sitting in WA I couldn't believe watching what was happening until she sent everyone to the naughty corner...n possibly fuxked a whole country......but .....and...in saying that everyone plays a part in it also....
I'm a very lucky human that lives 40km from town, live at work,do our shopping once a week...so lockdowns and staying at ghome are the norm for me...and the fact people liss me off makes I even easier

I don't agree with everything you said here mate, but i respect the respectful way you've stated your honest opinion.

Now we can both get respect ribbons awarded to us! For being respectful! To each other like teacher said! Yippee!

But seriously, IMO there has to come a day when we have to leave covid eradication behind. It's impossible. Covid's out of the genie bottle and can never be funneled back in. Just like the common cold. Just like influenza. We can't lock it out of the country unless we lock down for ever. We are going to get smashed by this disease like other countries have and it's just a matter of time. Set a date for people to get vaccinated by (there's plenty of vax), then open us up. It's gonna get bad mate. It's gonna be a catastrophe.
All state governments are trying to avoid the inevitable. Honourable, but futile IMO.

At the time of booking I could have had it this coming weekend but at that stage we were going to licola, I didn't want to miss out on that lol. Jokes on me right? Fwiw, I've been looking for over 6 months and had only just been able to find an appointment recently. I medically cannot get az, and am not eligible to be vaccinated in anywhere but the state hubs. Really limited my options but I'm glad it's finally happening.

Your last bit has merit and I think my boss has put it right in this statement "once they reach the vaccination target they will just open up, and those that don't want the vaccine will just have to take their chances. As it's been seen, the vaccine don't stop transmission, it just minimises the affects, so all the vaccinated will just be passing it on to the unvaccinated. They need to give everyone a chance to get vaccinated before they can take that risk, under 40 year Olds have only recently been given access to vaccines and let's face it, we are more important than you old farts right? So we need to survive lol. Once everyone has a fair go at vaccination and the injection rates start dropping then I think it will be time to open up

Mudski made mention of 200days in lockdown here in Melbourne.

I'm sure that there are lots of people in the same position as my son.

Next Friday is his 17th birthday, like last year it will be spent in lockdown. From going to a sport school, trading 3 nights and playing every Sunday over a 32 round season to being bored at home on his own. Some say that we are lucky to be both working yes we are, but at what cost..
