Need to pick some brains.

Is it legal to carry unleaded fuel in a rear jerry can holder?

If so, I want to make/buy something to carry one 25L can on the small barn door. I'll probably brace and use stronger bolts.

Is this doable.

Pretty sure it is illegal for petrol - diesel and water are OK.

Not sure exactly what part of which legislation this guy is referencing, but he mentions ADR's. If you want to carry fuel on the back of your car must be in an ADR complaint carrier..

I'll keep digging. But have a read.

And this. This is more like what I thought.

I've never heard of a law specifically saying you can't carry petrol on the back of your vehicle. I've heard you "shouldn't" but nothing to say you can't. I think you just need to carry it safely, and like the person in this link states.. With due care. I think an ADR approved carrier would help keep you out of any trouble.

How are you going to open the small door John with a carrier directly in front of the handle?

It's one of the those that bolt onto the spare wheel.

Yeah I want to put a small swing away, on my rear bar, there for a single jerry can holder, and attached it permanently to the door so the two open together. Just trying to work out how to actually get to the opening handle is the issue.

Mark what do you think of that holder in the pic. I'm not going to leave it on the car always, will the extra weight be a concern.

IMHO Jaysee, even the OEM spare tyre weight on our drivers side GU barn doors was a flaw in design from the get go unfortunately mate!
Not exactly sure how many years it takes but worth all GU wagon drivers inspecting their cracks just inline with the lower glass parallel:-(
All aftermarket rear carry weights should be loaded atop of ADR swing arm type bars for sure [emoji106][emoji106]

Yep. mudski 's Large barn door began peeling apart ... Not sure what year range, this happens. Especially when you hang a larger tyre with a steel rim onto it.

This is what happens to the barn door mate, and how you fix it.

Adding a another 20kg's plus the weight of the bracket, maybe 5-10kgs is a lot. Real lot.

I know its a lot of money but an aftermarket steel rear bar is the best option. Second to none.

BTW, Rossco MB Winnie @everyone who is reading this, I spoke with Milweld today as they also buy from me, and yep! From the horses mouth. He is starting to build bars again, production will start in a few months! I put in a request for him to design an auto door opening feature for the large barn door, as I was asked how I like my bar when I told them I had their bar on the back of my Patrol. I told him my only gripe is opening the bloody swing away everytime I need access to the back of the Patrol. Lets hope...

I would not have thought yours would fit Johns Patrol Nic, being a different shape body.

I’m only assuming mate. As the tail lights are different so the overall shape of the bar might change around that.

Thats one of the main reasons I mounted my spare internally.
Finally getting my Raslaar bar fitted on the 26th of feb along with some
new 285 BFG ATs
first up how would you mount it and be able to access the door handle
TBH i dont think its doable

As for weight I just weighed my 04 OE mag with a 285 muddies
and it was 35kilo, so thinking a jerry full would come in at 25 kg
both big weights, how about something coming out of your tow hitch
assuming youre not towing, would be easy to manage IMO
