Hi
Could someone advised me as to why if you have an auto patrol 3lt turbo diesel, you can only tow to a max of 2500kg and if you have a manual you can tow to a max of 3500kg? Noone can tell me.
Thanks

I don't know the official reason but logic dictates that given what you posted, the Manuals are stronger than the Auto's

I tend to agree with patch on the box issue but if you have exrta cooling for the auto you might get away with towing more wieght

I think everyone's right ... engine compression seems logical to me as a manual would accommodate 'descent' weight more comfortably ...

I'm not sure of the type of auto they use, but it could compared to the ford auto boxes. If you had a borg warner, it didn't lock down in second during manual shift to reduce speed, unless you got to that lower speed first. But, a C4 did, so therefore you could tow heavier weights in the vehicle that had those autos. I have not had experience with nissan autos, but the talk I've seen here, leads me to think they are not real strong internally,(similar to borg warners), so this would be the explanation that I could suggest, until someone with undeniable facts comes along and offers more info.
Maybe there is a stronger auto available?

Check out http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/#start
They have an upgraded valve body to suit the Patrol, which I'm pretty sure would overcome the power handling / towing load problem.
Main thing would be to keep the transmission cool.
Second main thing is - who the hell would want to tow 3500kg with a 3.0 patrol. I can't even imagine trying to overtake something, or even trying to merge onto a freeway with that load would be mission impossible.

Hi
I am not saying I want to tow 3500kg with the 3.0 patrol but we were looking at upgrading our caravan and one we liked came in at 2750kg which was greater than recommended for towing with the auto. But i think it would be easier and cheaper looking at a lighter off-road van.
Thank you all for your input it was very helpful.
