Which oil cooler for auto box ?

I have a TB42 with automatic transmission , soon going to tow a caravan so want to fit an oil cooler. What brand oilcoolere is best and , what is best fitting location / size and what other suggestions please.

I was faced with this problem and there's bugger all room between grill and radiator on a GQ , decided to do the torque converter lock up mod instead and the difference is chalk and cheese for temps and fuel economy.

I have never heard about that torque converter lockup - searched the forum and it looks very very promising. Easy job.

I live almost in Warrumbungle N.P. NSW with two very very steep climbs - one has the nickname the tow killer - the other day I just made it to the top with 1989 GQ TB42 Safari auto + my 2.5 tonne trailer - crawling over the top at near stand-still. Forgot to engage low range in time ......... :-(
I read it is not to be used on steep climbs - if I would engage it before going on that climb - would that help / or damage ?

Best used for towing only , mine is a TD 4.2 and I have to be over 60 or it labours the motor so no good for off road steep technical stuff .
Leave overdrive off when using the torque lock but if you've got a tailwind and you're in the NT in the right place I've had mine at 120k 2100rpm , wouldn't recommend doing that though was just a tester .
Normally travel between 80 - 100 on bitchy .
I do use the lock in low 4wd in soft sand .

Sorry just re read your post , if it's too steep and you're revs start to die just flick it off .
I've done the cheap arse lazy barstard install and just have one stepped relay with one off on switch .

When I did mine I used a Superchaep Auto "foot operated dip switch" that I screwed to the side of the foot rest to engage/disengage the lockup.

A toggle switch on the dash to "arm" the lockup IE 12 volts to the foot switch, a LED on the dash to show if the lockup was engaged all easy peasy, Both switches, LED and Relay cost less than $50.

Used it onroad, offroad, low range IE everywhere no probs at all and made an amazing difference to the car

My first action is an oil cooler for now - even the car without trailer struggles now in temperatures over 40 degrees on those two crazy steep climbs.
Next week have the relays and switches for the lock kit to make.
But what is a stepped relay , what does it do ?

I was told that a straight ON /OFF switch might damage the solenoid , that it has to be a soft start electronic switch that sends a slow increasing voltage....
Any thoughts about that ?

Mines been in for about 2 years and I've done maybe 40,000 Kay's plus of towing a camper trailer up north and over to the west giving it a flogging and mine is still going .
Don't switch it on if your under heavy load is the only precaution I take

Not an issue in any of the GQ's that I know of (mine, mates and clubbies) and FWIW mine did over 200,000 no worries at all.
The idea of stepping the voltage is so that the lockup doesn't grab, as long as you don't switch it on under high load IE feather the throttle or switch on at lighter loads you have no problem.

All I ever use (on GQ's) is a "changeover relay" like in the link (for illustration purposes only) Pin 30 to the solenoid, 87A ECU signal, 87 +12Volts
