It has probably been asked a 1000 time.
I’m up for new rubber for my 2005 GU (STS) 4.2 TD
I’m thinking Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 or Cooper ST (both around $420 each and I want five)
They are both expensive tyres, but in my opinion - worth it.
What have all you members had and would you buy them again.

Dont mind the Nitto Trail Grapplers on my JK (on my 3rd set) and the recently acquired pooey came with new terra grapplers but I have not had it long enough to rate them, quiet tho and good on bitumen and snow, made in Japan.

I would never run Coopers again. I had one De-Laminate at 100km/h and Coopers offered me a Hat.......
I am on my second set of KM2s and paid $300 a corner and been very very happy with them.

Mickey Thompson's P3s. End of story.
Have ran them now since they got released circa 2013. Awesome tyre. Wears nicely and keeps up decently with even the muddies.
Has very low noise.
I am yet to hear anything good a out the Cooper's .

A friend had all four of his Coopers delaminate on his Honda CRV over time. Wouldn't touch'em with a barge pole.
Your question will get a variety of answers, but would be most useful to you if you add what sort of mix of driving you want to do.
From my perspective for sealed road use, dirt road use & off road in many conditions I have found Bridgestone's D697's excellent. However I will change next time I'm up for a set, but ours get used for a fair bit of remote solo travel, at times in conditions where the risk of sidewall damage is great & the one thing I have come to dislike about the D697's is they have thinner sidewalls which bulge out more than some of their competitors making them vulnerable. I went through a set without any problem, but in the back of my mind was concern about the vulnerability. This was cemented when I lost a 10 day old tyre when a small unseen rock , at moderate speeds put a 3" gash through a sidewall. This would be less of an issue on lighter vehicles, but ours at touring weight (close to the extended GVM of 3900 kg) means we often have to keep pressures higher than I'd prefer to keep the side walls of the rear tyres out of harms way. That said I have run them as low as 18 psi over long distances in sandy country & they managed very well. Different story in rocky country. Based upon what I have observed to be the most popular among locals throughout the Pilbara & Kimberley my next tyres will be either BFGoodrich or Toyo AT's. Both have a heavier side wall, plus extra rubber shouldrr protection compared to the Bridgestone. They may cost more (& I run 9 tyres) but I know the extra peace of mind they'll bring will be worth it.

KO2's for me, just did a 9,500km trip towing with them on some pretty ordinary roads. Still look as good as new.
Also have a set of KM2's but didn't put them on this winter.

When times comes for a new set I'll wouldn't mind trying what Hodge has.

Funny how Cooper get such a bad name seeing as they own Mickey Thompson and Dick Cepek...... I've had Mickey Thompson ATZson the Patrol and loved them. Currently running Dick Cepek Fun Country II's and again rate them. Both aggressive all terrains, great grip on wet roads and mud clears off them pretty quickly off road.... Both great on sand too.
Was put off the BFGs after my old KOs, found the compound too hard, chipped easy on rocks and were terrible on wet roads, absolutley hated them. I realise compound was changed etc for the KO2s but they just didn't interest me.
On the Paj I'm currently running Pirelli Scorpion ATRs which have been great on road and sand, these are definitely more road biased tyres though. Will be getting Bridgestone D697s fitted next week, so will be able to compare with what Cuppa mentioned about them.

I've had 3 sets of Coopers, loved every set. Got at least 60,000 out of them, not a single puncture. Did the VHC, Simpson, mud, beach and lots of tarmac.
Had 1 set of BFG muddies on the old Hilux, not a single issue.
Currently running out a set of Nitto Trail Grappler MTs. Done at least 30,000 on them, probably more. Just under half worn. Done Simpson, Madigan, Anne Beadell, Surveyor General's. VHC, mud and tarmac.
Only issue is they pull to the left, have never been able to get them to drive straight. Very very good tyres, damn strong but heavy.
When I got the Nittos, they were around $280 a corner. Coopers were around $420. Can't justify the expense with Coopers. BFGs were around low $300s from memory.
Nitto and Toyo come from the same factory, well that's what I've been told & are probably the same construction except for the tread.
There's a brand called Hercules. They use the carcasses from Coopers and put their own tread layer on top. The Cooper sidewalls are pretty strong. So with that combo you end up with a not too bad tyre. I've found though that the Hercules tread layer is softer than others, so it wears more quickly.

Nitto Mud Grapplers are the best.
Yep, I'm impressed with mine.
I think they may be the first set of tyres in which the outside edges of the tyres haven't scalloped out, you know when half a lug is normal height, the other half is worn away.

Hi bloke. Like you I rotate my tyres every service. The bfg at's on the smaller rig have done a touch over 100k. I'll get one more rotation out of 'em
and then it's time to replace. Been excellent value, not so much as a slow leak, never mind a puncture or sidewall tear. They have done the hard yards
over all sorts of terrain, bar snow, and handled it with aplomb. I'll be sticking with them for sure.

Interesting to see you guys getting 100K out of tyres, which is great. I look at mine and they're about a bit more than half worn and I wouldn't be game to take them away on any remote trips.
I'm guessing you guys scoot around on your tyres close to home when they get low to get up to that 100,000 km mark?

I'm currently running the Nitto Trail Grapplers and went with this choice as I had done two sidewalls on my BFG KM2's so I decided to look for the toughest sidewall tyres around. Nitto/Toyo kept coming up so I made the change.
With regard to the BFG sidewalls - I did one at 90kph on a Gulf trip between Burketown and Roper Bar where the road is rocky and corrugated and I probably sliced it on a rock, and the other was staked on a narrow track. That was my second set of BFG's. My observations - I liked the BFG up to about the 50,000klm mark, at which point they became hard and slippery on wet bitumen. Probably 3yrs old at that stage. I liked them offroad and even onroad for a mud tyre up until they hardened up. I got a fair bit of lug chipping but nothing out of the ordinary. The pucker factor from the sidewall blowout at 90kph just helped me decide to explore other options.
With regard to the NITTO Trail Grappler - they are heavier than the BFG for sure. I have now done 45,000klm on them and at around the 40k mark I noticed them starting to get a bit slippery on wet bitumen. I am now very careful on roundabouts if there is any rain around. Feels like driving on glass. I suspect I will realistically get 50K out of them but I am looking to change them out now as we get closer to the FNQ wet season. I have found them great off road, and even on sand, where I have had them down to 8psi. The heavier sidewall means that you really do need to drop the pressures more significantly. I have had no punctures or blow outs though which was my main criteria. There has been a reasonable amount of lug chipping but with regular rotations they have all worn fairly evenly. These tyres have given me confidence in them for real remote stuff and on many trips I have actually stopped carrying a second spare.
From what I've seen over the years, the most common tyres (in FNQ at least) are still probably the BFG, and for good reason. The Toyo and Nitto would now however be a close second. The Toyo has been around for a bit longer and is better known but both carcases have the same sidewall internals. In my circles, most of the blokes who really travel remotely appear to go with the Toyo Mud Terrain.
I have more recently been looking at getting the Toyo Open Country R/T or the Nitto Ridge Grappler. Same sidewall as the mud terrain tyre but a little less agressive and would be better for touring. Unfortunately they don't import the Ridge Grappler in 285/75/16 as I like the look of it the best. Might be the Toyo R/T for me.
The Toyo A/T does not have the same sidewalls as the R/T or the M/T and I've heard some very negative views on them.
Just my experience. Sidewall strength is still my highest priority in choosing a tyre. It might not be for others.

Interesting. I've not kept a count, but I'd have to have done at least 40,000kms on my Nittos, I don't get the feeling of driving on glass, not that means anything I guess, there are so many variables.
8psi is very low, I'm guessing you didn't have beadlocks? Not sure I'd be game to go that low. I deflated my set of 265/70x17 Copper ST Maxxs down to 15 psi and they really bagged out. Had the Nittos down to 15 and they don't look much different to when they're at 30.

yeah, had to tow the tinny up a huge sand dune in the middle of the day and the sand was super soft and deep. I'd had them to 10psi before on several occasions with no issue and had no issue at 8psi. Even at that pressure the sidewall bagging isn't extreme but not sure I would want to go any lower that's for sure.

Excellent. I’m sure it’s all about rotating regularly. My tyres also get used on a range of terrain. Sand, mud, rock and of course highway.
Forget money (which I suppose is important) when you find a set of tyres that works for you all good, but while you rave about your tyres there will always be someone who has a horror story about the same tyres.

Rotation and ‘Observation’ is absolute key IMO!
We’ve just foolishly half buggered a front pair of KM3’s on a new full set by foolishly/forgetting to re-align after installing offset radius arm bushes on the family faithful GU in its first 10k wear.
In regards Coopers (ST) much earlier ute days, circa 1999, did unfortunately suffer severe tyre bubbles before blowout and honourably was given 5/8 credit back on their 30k performed under 80k warranty.
Could’ve been a dangerous situation and was assured that the ‘D’ timeline marking was the issue IIRC.
We all have Boo-Boo’s but that one scared me personally too much back to BFG.

Your last point is certainly valid. At about the 80k the Trol took over the hard work of draggiing trailers n the like thru nasty terrain to great camping spots.
The smaller vehicle became daily driver/winter firewood foray vehicle. Never far from home and light work, so, yeah probably got more from them that way.

Found MTZ’s and KM2’s to be great tyres for me in all conditions
I had MTZ,s on my GQ and I rotated them (5) every 5000km. They lasted 3years and were only just half worn.
Also put a set on mx ex-wife’s Prado 4 years ago and she’s only just due now.
I had KM2 on my GU and they got real noisy real quick, stopped when I rotated them.
Had Falken Wildtrak on my Hilux they’re A/T though. Quietest I’ve ever had love them. Got BFG A/t’s on the new GU

A tad noisier than the D697 Bridgestones I had previously (2 sets) but a tougher tyre I think, & certainly with stronger sidewalls, which is what I wanted.

I also have BFG A/Ts. You don't have to worry about anything, as they're "top of the line" tires. I bought my set from 4WheelOnline and so far, I have no complaints.
