Hi all I'm new to forums so apologies if I've broken any etiquette here. I have been following a lot of the posts on the RD28's hopefully to learn from experience and knowledge of others, so thank you to everyone that shares there knowledge. My son and I have saved a 19989 Series 1 GU patrol (RD28Ti) from the scrap heap. It was a one owner body and interior in excellent condition. Worth saving. Previous owner didtn want spend the money fixing it. So we got it at a carton econmy price. Had 250k on the dial. Service history was documented and good, no knocks apart front crank and rear oil seal leaks, leaking PS and starts after a very long cranks (Glow Plugs), gear box no unusual noises. We knew we were up for some serious tool time and some parts. Not being pro-mechanics but a good head around engines. Started off weel we snapped 3 of the 6 glow plugs, we expected that, seized. Even after soaking them too death for 2 days with penetrene. So off with the head and found it to be very clean uner the head and rocker cover, no gunk, very happy. Intake and valves different story chokers with gunk. EGR wasn't blocked off. So we bit the bullet decided to do the whole lot new head, timing belt, belts, pump, seals, injectors, egr etc etc etc etc. We came stuck at the timing sprocket. A big pause on how to remove this sucker. Heard so many horrifying stories on this alone and the issues with the harmonic balancer. Any ways we struck gold with thread from The Ferret on his tips on using the hose clamps. With some minor mods it slid off like butter on a frying pan. Using a hose clamp and 3 bolts for grip plus a puller. Ill attach a pic of it before and after. Can now get to the seals and finish the job. Thank you Ferret!! I thought Id share this tip for anyone else taking on the RD28T challenge. Ill keep you posted on how we go with the other repairs.
