View Full Version : Meet da Mav!

Hi folks, just thought I’d chuck a “diary” of my latest purchase.

Been wanting to get into 4x4-ing for best part of 2019 and I’ve finally pulled the trigger. She’s 1989 DA Maverick in Blue over Grey, TB42 Straight petrol manual, not much else to say.

It’s the first car I’ve bought (I’ve bought somewhere in region of 20 cars over the years) without stereo system which suits me seeing I’m Deaf so if my passengers want some racket, I could plonk a set of muddies and drive it on black top. Oh and I’ve got a CB radio but no antenna anywhere lol.

Now to gather parts in preparation for roadworthy, I’ve complied a following list here;

- Windscreen and rubbers.
- Tyres. - Bought and probably need to buy skinnier wheel/tyre combo.
- Steering wheel column cover. - Bought
- Grill (more the bit where it slides in radiator support). - Had a look, probably buy some clips and plonk it in.
- Swivel hubs, Will try to get lokka while I’m at it. - Bought swivel hub rebuild kit with kingpin bearings, hopefully I'll have Lokka on my hands tonight.
- Steering wheel, very twist...
- Flares, I’m more inclined to get some sort of rubber from Clark rubber and make flares and mud flaps in one.
- Windscreen wipers - Will do while I'm getting windscreen replaced.
- Fix the door handle, doesn’t open on RHS rear.

There’s a picture, if I can figure how Tapatalk stuff.

Gonna chuck a set of 33’s, snorkel and maybe thicker rear swaybar and delete front swaybar for now and learn how to drive slow and tall car after many fast cars including 10x Skylines (including 4 GTR’s!) and others.

Do feel free to chuck up suggestions here.

Went and grabbed a set of Maxxis Bighorn in 33x12.5x15 for a song. Apparently 50% worn but looks like plenty by my eyes.

Think you better start a build thred of your own
then every one can follow your mods. not all look
at the intros. But we all love looking at pics of Patrols being modded
Oh yeah

Bought few stuff I need for roady.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/11/40.jpg

Chasing a bit to attach the grill to radiator support or just buy some sort of clips.

Once I have some rubber lokka, front swivel gaskets and bearing kit, then I’ll get greasy with a mate who is helping me.

So, I've been collecting bits and pieces and came to realisation that neither 31's I have and 33's I've bought would pass roadworthy - 31's might be too worn for roady folk and 33's are 1" wider along with destroyed flares so I have a question for y'all, have anyone fit wheels off say Hilux, Landcruiser, Triton, Pajero etc with 106mm centrebore on Patrol without "massaging" the hub or wheel itself?

Gonna try fitting wheels off Hilux this weekend.

Wish me luck, oh and I've bought swivel hub rebuild kit, front diff gasket and hopefully I'll have Lokka on my hands tonight and get greasy this weekend.

So I’ve bought Lokka with spare dowel pins the other day.

And went to mates place doing some spannering.

33’s fit in the back without too much trouble, haven’t got the chance to fit front as mate and I ran out of time today.

Oh and took the bullbar out. Chucked new brakes in the back, front will go in when we’re working it on next.

Long time no post, got snowed under at work, marking student's assessments and all...

But managed to find time to grab parts needed to finish the front axle off.
Bought the following;
- Hub egg rings
- Hub spacers
- CV nut with tool (GU 2 prong version)
- Mate ordered swivel bearing cap kit

Bought RHS indicator with body loom and plug as mine is cracked and previous owner decided to hardwire it into sub loom in the indicator itself.

Tomorrow, it's spanner time! Hopefully I'll get bolts for bullbar and clips for front grill to be affixed to the radiator support.

Will I get it done before xmas? Stay tuned and find out.

Lokka has new dowel pins, nearly broke mate who installed the springs, had to calm him down a lot and suggested few ways to put the springs in.

LHS spindle time. Just need to pack bearings with grease and bolt up.

Today’s progress has been slower than we’d liked to but progress is progress.

Spindles on both ends is assembled before going in the axle. Just waiting for another time to take front diff out and transfer lokka centre in that pumpkin then bolt it in, grease the CV’s, put it back together.

Currently my mate is egging me on to buy a winch so he doesn’t want me to put the bullbar and worry about winch later!

Apparently there’s not much cradles available for ol Q, might have to go to Patrol-a-part and see if they have one.

No progress lately, I’ve been busy partying, planning for 2020 at work and mate is constantly knackered, hopefully I’ll get to spanner on it this weekend depending on said mate’s availability.

Been pondering if 33x12.5 will pass roady first go with Bunnings flares or if I need to get narrower tyres - my flares are rooted so that need removing, my mud flaps are for narrow pack.

Decisions decisions...

Got to work on the Mav while hangover from the party last night.

Took the original diff out and discovered its 3.9 not 4.11 as I’d originally assumed, so we’re swapping diff centres as we can’t be bothered finding rear 4.11.

Took out some of stereo wiring as it doesn’t have speakers in and CB as it isn’t even connected.

Current update: Lokka is in and mate’s assembling front end now, so far he has installed RHS CV, kingpin bearings.

Hopefully we’ll be able to have axle assembled.

Nup, just 25 years of organic mess that was thrown in without really thinking about it - time to clear it up now. Big job but will pay dividends for sure in the long run.

Finally some update today. Went sailing in Geelong, watching my missus’ nephews racing yesterday which was lovely and relaxing apart from starting the sailing race confuse the hell of me.

And now RHS is nearly done, just need to put free wheeling hubs in, and now to put LHS CV, spindles, caliper and pads in.

Got to work on the Mav today, finally sourced non twisty steering wheel and took it out and then put the non twisty wheel in, replaced the negative earth cable, now working on RHS rear door as it’s playing up.

Now to do flares, windscreen and wipers.

The door is fixed! As it turns out the plastic bit where handle goes in the lock mechanism were loose and mate has fixed it.

While measuring for flares and I’d discovered that LHS sticks out more than RHS meaning it has lift of some sort.

After some googling, it may not be the case, either way I need to sort it out because 20/25mm variation from LHS to RHS.

No updates apart from bought a set of GU4 springs for $10 and see if axles are in-line with the chassis.

Don’t think I’ll get to spanner for a while, my back is now playing up and I’m at doctors office as I write this - fun times ahead!

Argh, good luck. Back pain is never fun when you can't stand up straight.
While you're at the doctor's, get them to check if you have a 20/25mm variation from LHS to RHS.

Not much of an update here but, bought belts, thermostat, hoses, coolant overflow tank and choke knob. The plan is to work it on along with fresh coolant, oil and plugs next weekend weather pending - not keen on spannering in hot sun again!

Still need to find a time to head to Patrolapart to grab new fan as mine's cracked quite badly.
