Wondering if anyone can help I have recently bought a 2005 GU coil 4.2tdi (manual) only 220 on the clock, she really lacks power in lower gears .. sluggish ! love everything about her so hoped someone may have experienced the same . My partner has 79 series landcruiser which flies past so you can imagine the comments I get :( any advice appreciated before I go to a mechanic so at least I can have some idea being a girl 👧 lol

Sons absolutely flys down low and no expert but I'd find out what the boost pressure at the turbo is apart from the usual airfilter etc .

Likely it has never been touched out of the factory. They are a bit of a slug. But... I mean BUT. They respond very well to a decent dyno tune for a start.
Fit an Exhaust temp gauge and a boost co trolled and have it tuned for the first win.
Remember your BF has a 4.5 V8 and you have a 4.2 straight 6. His will be stronger but you have way way more potential than he does.
Start with a decent tune. Then come back and say g'day and we can help you spend some cash to make him squirm... lol
He has a V8.... But it's a little V8. V8 Toyota driver's are wankers who think the end of the sentence is V8. Td42s are a Beast motor when the right mods are done.
Welcome here.

Yup as Mudrunner said, a nice tune, and from there on, there are things that can make them absolutely sing. Exhaust, larger intake and then from there with some more $, but not necesary a better turbo and pump will blow the tits off any 1VD-FTV.

'Tis true! Mine is fairly mild, won't beat the 'crab off the mark but annoys the shite out of 'em when I'm trying to park on their tray at 130k

Check out my post from 3 years ago. A 3" exhaust & dyno transformed my '06 TD42i from a piece of wet lettuce into the car it should have been off the factory floor. It is still no 'speed machine', but I love it.

Sounds like a stock gu 4.2 to me...when I originally bought mine I came from a bt50 with a lot more power and a lot more earlier power in the rev range...so the patrol disappointed me the main thing I hated was how much turbo lag the patrol had 2000rpm was jsut to late for the power to come on...did a lot of reasearch and ended up fitting a p4x4 16g turbo Which transformed the car power was a lot earlier around the 1700-1800 range and with a tune they come onto power even earlier...

I’ve got an ‘05 4.2td wagon had since new. Never had anything done other than a 2” lift.
Around the 210000km mark I found it under power towing my heavy camper trailer.
Took it to a reputable diesel bloke in Narellan and had a good talk.
Fitted 3” dump pipe, 3” Redback exhaust, new injectors and dyno tune.
Result = a powerful new truck.
This was my experience, but you may be different.

How much did that set you back in $?
What sort of results did you get on the Dyno?

It’s on long ago to remember the exact cost but I do know that it was reasonable for what was done. I’ll look for receipt, but don’t like my chances.
This was the dyno print out and I have been very happy with the vehicle’s performance since having this little bit of work done

Thanks mate.
I thought a stock TD42T without intercooler outputs 91kw and 330Nm why does yours baseline at 65.6kw and 250Nm?

His will be intercooled being a 2005. Those numbers he has a measured is at the wheels, the stock figures you have seen would be from the flywheel I am assuming. There is a percentage loss through the drivetrain but not sure of how much. But yeah those figures just don’t look right to me.

I have little knowledge in this area. This is what I was given after work completed.
To help educate me, what doesn’t look right and what should I be seeing.
Thanks

The before and after power output figures. Just seems way too low. Out of the crate this motor is 118kw/ 330Nm.
