Small 12v winch???

I have an Oztent which I pack on the roof rack. It weighs about 30Kgs.

It's quite a job getting it up onto the roof rack and I'm thinking of what I can use in place of my muscles.

Anyone know of any small 12v electric winches? I've been looking and haven't found anything yet, just wondering if anyone here may know a small 12v winch????

Or any other clever ideas on how I can get a 30KG tent onto a roof rack, I load it onto the rack from the drivers side.

Maybe a boat trailer type small 12V winch 10G mate.
Another idea I did on an old 55 wagon for my 50kg tinnie was just a roller across the rear of the rack.
Would just lean the tinnie against it then push it up top.
You could buy ladder rollers off the shelf but I just used 40nb pipe with a bearing hammered in each end secured to the rack rear with spigots on brackets.

threedogs was designing a wheel lifter. I use a small hand winch to lift a small tinny onto my camper. Also use an electric winch on a multipurpose crane on the farm ute.

You can buy cheapie 3000lb winches for about $150, or go the warn 500kg winch that operates off a battery drill circa $300 from memory. Hooked up to a removable davit arm and you are done.

I found this, a 50mm poly conveyor roller. It has spring loaded shafts, which I guess means you push the ends in they pop out and sit in a cup.

Do you reckon I could just let the ends sit through some holes on some right angle and bolt that right angle to the roof rack, or do you reckon the roller may pop out when I'm lifting/pushing/loading stuff over it?

That is a bog standard way of mounting. You need maybe a mm either side clearance or whatever the shaft compression dimension is for the distance between the rails and they will stay put - there are probably millions of conveyors in service with this style of roller. If the rollers have plastic bushes they just need a little lub squirt from time to time. If open bearing watch dust build up.

I use one of these to load. It works fantastic and then it is the last thing on the roof on top of the Oztent and becomes the Kitchen cooker bench at camp. Great spot to sit the BBQ.

I'm going to try just pulling it up the side, gently of course, of the Trol and onto the roof that way. I tested the theaory the yesterday & it wasn't easy but not too hard either. It should be easier with some rollers I reckon.

We have a RV4 and from memory is 23kg~ or there abouts. I dont take it often, but I can see this breaking backs if loaded often.
I stand mine upright at the rear of the car, lean one end onto the rack and then slide up from the bottom. Rollers would be idea for this!
I see some people just grab it like a roll of carpet and strong man throw it up onto the car like a log. Their backs will know about it later in life...

Side Note.

From day 1 that i have owned my RV5 i have always had a Second full size tent bag. This makes packing much easier and also allows me to fit the extra poles, ground sheet, pegs, peaked sides and front wall etc in the second bag and reduces the weight of the lift quite a bit. Makes fitting the packed up tent into the bag heaps easier too. I use a storm cover on my RV5 and have never removed it. even with the storm cover attached it fits in the bag fine now.

Oh, and the extra Bag was Cheap as Chips from OzTent website.

I would expect you to drop 10kgs off the single lift for sure.

Mine's a Jettent FX25 which we reckon is great, only downsize is the weight.

I've been chucking it up on the roof, it's not as long as the RV4/5 etc, only 1200 long, but bulky.

My wheel lifter easily and safely liftes a rim/tyre combo flat up and onto your roof rack
Saw some for sale at $2500 I was happy at $250, if interested give me a PM . It folded flat to travel.
Now its just sitting in the Outback Ideas Museum ha ha ha
Boom is about 3.5ft long it clamped onto the roofrack to spread the load.
Works a treat imho
Would hate to do further damage to my back throwing a tyre up top, well I couldnt
Just thinking now it would be easy to adapt a boom and pulley system
so you could use your existing winch,,,,, just a thought
