Hi There Everyone,
My Name is Aaron
Im very humbly retired and am thinking of buying a sec hand 1/2002 Y61 Patrol from local car yard.
its an ST 4 cylinder diesel done 339000 kms.
No documented service history known.
Has gone up to Kakadu couple times it seems by its stickers.
Manual transmission.
What things should I look for in engine - was told oil leaks near turbo and something about a mod to engine to stop detonation and engine exploding - fitting some metal plate that prevents buildup of contamination on MAF sensor was issue 2002 upwards for a while.

Planning on RACQ inspection but they dont know everything about these engines.

Every second person I know seems to own a Patrol so they must be good.

Your thoughts appreciated.
Aaron..

Welcome Aaron,

That's a lot of K's for what I'm assuming is the 3.0l motor. I'm assuming it suits your budget but if you can I'd be looking for less km's on that motor - especially with no service history. They're hit and miss at the best of times.

As suggested, don't touch it with those kms on it. It's a big expense waiting to happen.

Thanks for the advice.
I ended up buying another one form a car yard - a 2004 ST-L with same engine but with 280K on it.
I bought it, took it home then found it leaking oil on driveway within an hour on driveway.
Leak seemed to be coming near RHS oil press sender high pressure- so changed that, still leaked than gave up.

Then while changing blown bulb LHS clearance light found rust in the chassis not good.
Dealer said may be able to fix it if not will get refund. Traded in my previous car a jackaroo on the deal its sold.
so ATM I have no car at all while its being assessed, the wife's Micra broke down and overheated yesterday, now have borrowed mother in laws car.

link is pics of the rust, do you think a dealer would pay for a repair79431 of this magnitude.

I think it might cost a couple of thousand if it can be done to Dep of Transport standard.

Maybe I will settle for a picture of a Patrol and buy another Micra and put miniature muddies on it.
:-( sadface
Thankyou for advice.

I probably would push for a refund anyway. That rust will be all through it waiting to cause you issues.
