Hi All
New to this Forum
We have a 2004 Patrol with a TD42 intercooled - 200,000K
Its been a very reliable and solid 4WD, we bought nearly 10 years ago at 96,000KM and its rarely missed a beat. Best vehicle I have owned.
I'm not that mechanically minded, so I'm searching for some answers out there.
I'm seeking advice from anyone who has correctly blocked an EGR value on such an engine. I've had a block put on the EGR value when we purchased a large caravan to help boost performance and fuel economy. Seen a slight benefit. Someone (who claims to be 4.2 expert) the other day said to me that we also need to disable the butterfly value in the intercooler that is connected to the EGR system somehow. With the EGR blocked the butterfly value may be coming on and starving the engine of air flow. I've spoken to my normal mechanic and several other mechanics in town and they don't know anything about this butterfly in the intercooler procedure. Some of the forums I have been reading do state the butterfly value needs disabling as well - so maybe there is something required here. Can anyone advise what this butterfly value does?
I too have had what seems to be heat issues towing under stress, either hot weather or up hills. I'm told its normal for the factory gauge to rise to a fair way up towards the max mark, first time we towed the caravan up the Adelaide Hills the gauge rose very quickly towards the max mark, scared the shit of out me, but was a very hot day as well. Once we got out the climb it fell back to normal. Does a bigger radiator help ? or just add more water to cool down !
Another issue I'm having occasionally is "over run" after switching the car off where it knocks and bangs, sounds like its running half the number of cylinders - seems the fuel pump isn't fully shutting of the engine. Either have to turn on the key again, give a rev and switch off again, or stall the engine by dropping into 4th gear. I'm told its a common fault with the TD42 - but try telling my wife what to do this happens! Would like to know exactly what this is and what it might take to fix it.
Finally can anyone recommend a mechanic or service center that specialises in these TD42 engines and knows all the tips and tricks?
Thanks J
