View Full Version : Aftermarket seat question.

My back continues to give me grief, exacerbated I believe by camp chairs & standard GU seats. When travelling full time & these are the only seats we have it is not good news. Neither have lumbar support & both lack useful adjustment. Both encourage, for me at least, a hunched sitting position.

I have been unable to find any camp chairs which are 'orthopaedically' designed (amazing given the number of oldies who travel for long periods) & have once again started to seriously consider aftermarket suspension seats for the car. This was brought to the fore after recently sitting in a Toyota Troopie fitted with Stratos LTSS3000 seats, the owner reckoned they were probably the best thing he had added to his highly modified remote travel vehicle & the moment I sat in in the drivers seat they just felt 'right'. The air adjustable lumbar support almost made me want to kiss his seat! Only almost you should note - I'm not a pervert! :)

Wife suffers hip pain on longer drives, especially over corrugations, so 2 seats are needed.

Anyhow, we are thinking we might try to get a pair when we reach Cairns, before we go up the Cape .............. but here is the question to anyone who knows. If we get them fitted with the approved fitting kits a)will they need to then be 'engineer approved' given there are no airbag issues in the DX ute & b) if so is this likely to be possible when being fitted interstate (ie.In Queensland to a Victorian registered car)?

We will continue to be in & out of service areas so if I don't acknowledge your reply, thanks in advance.

Regards
Cuppa (Currently in Boroloola, NT)

The OzTent Hard arm camp chair has a Lumbar Strap and it awesome for tuning to your needs. It has been copied by many but they leave the lumbar strap out. The Oztent chair is a winner. The ARB chair may be the same.

Have a look at this link. you can see the strap coming from the front legs just below the arm rests. that is a Lumbar strap.

Have a chat with this seller on Ebay mate, he is in Brisbane and may do a change over for you. he custom makes seats using the Nissan frame so no engineering required. He would likely be able to fit lumbar airbags i would think too. Worth a call for sure.

Thanks MR, appreciate your posts, will have to try sitting in one of those Oztent chairs when I get the chance, bnut will also need to check if we can fit it's folded size in our limited space. If 'King' means king size it may not.

re. the Brisbane seller, I'll bear it in mind, but Brissie is a long way from Cairns & we are unsure if we'll be headed south after the Cape/& Cairns.

My '99 ST didn't have Airbags and no issues with Dept of Transport when fitting the Stratos Seats here in WA as long as you are also using the Stratos supplied Patrol seat rail kit for the non-air suspension seats IE no Mod Plates or engineering etc required.

but...

I think there is potentially an issue with seat belts for the Air Suspension versions.
IIRC the issue is to do with the vehicle inertia belts not being part of the seat so in an accident potentially the seat can compress, the auto belt tensioner takes up slack, the inertia mechanism locks the belt and the seat decompresses and squishes the occupant also potentially locking the seat belt so it cannot release.
Again, IIRC, air suspension seats should have the belts attached to the seat not the vehicle body BUT not sure if that is legislated.

I can vouch for the fact that when I upgraded from non-air Stratos to air Stratos in my GU every now and then when in gnarly offroad the belt would def lock momentarily and be a PIA as you bounced around... Jeez they were damn comfy tho

You might want to investigate the truck seat option. There are quite a few shock absorbing seats available these days and almost all trucks use them. I can vouch for their effectiveness. I know they do make a version for the Land Cruiser, but not sure about the Patrol.
Someone like https://seatsrus.com.au/. They are Brisbane but it will give you an idea of what is around.

Yeah the OZTent chairs pack up into a round bag like any other camp chair. they are a good size.

There may be $1500 reasons for a detour down to Brissie for a quick seat swap mate.

Quick update to my prev ^^^^

All the 3000 series incl the LTSS are tickety boo for compliance etc here in WA... only proviso is they must be fitted using the approp rail kit.

This guy is not far from my house. I have sat in these seats and spoken to him about a set for the 62. Basically your imagination is the limit for this guy. He had plenty of different styles and options and they were all pretty dam comfortable.

At $1650 for a Pair of Seats its a Bloody Bargain!! Bolt in. end of story. If you can get some bolsters air bags into them for say $2000 your on a winner. The stratos will cost you more than that PER SEAT and then you need to buy the bases for $500 each or something. Bargain.

As a ‘temporary’ GU solution Cuppa mate, think I mentioned a few years back, pardon the pun. Thoroughly can recommend calling in to a specialised mobility type shop hopefully nearby on your adventures out there somewhere? Slow moving stock may find you scoring state of the art technology.
As before, love my 1/2 price Sciatica air bag cushion, been all over the globe cattle class in years gone by too [emoji106][emoji106]

Seat bases for the LTSS were $450 ish last time I got one from Stratos/KAB... they are actually made by Recaro

So that is $2000 a side. Making the change overs in Brisbane even more attractive. Will save at least $2000

Once again getting aftermarket seats has been placed on the back burner (pun intended).

I spoke with the three places who can supply them in Cairns & prices varied between $2800 each fitted, & $3300 fitted for the same Stratos LTSS . $5600 to $6600 is too much for a pair of seats. We will wait until we find some at a better price, either used or 'on special'. Wnt happen before we go up the Cape next year.

The $1660 each price on the link in MR's post is unfortunately way out of date, I contacted them & would have ordered a pair like a shot at that price. It was a place which provides info to folks with disabilities etc, they don't supply anything, & suggested I contact the Stratos people direct which I did. As of a couple of weeks ago the RRP is $2500 per seat plus fitting kit (plus labour to fit in Qld, where 2 out of 3 retailers insisted engineering approval was required & a plate added to the car @$130 extra). The Stratos people did say that I could probably buy at under the RRP if I bought from a retailer & not from them! How dumb is that!

Going down to Brisbane, a round trip of 3580kms on the Bruce Hwy (Yuk) to buy seats, albeit custom made & cheaper (but without suspension) is simply not a desirable or convenient option.

So whilst far from high tec I have invested $90 in a better quality lumbar support than the $5 cheap shop type I had been using in conjunction with a cushion. It had sort of worked but required readjustment every time I got out of the seat or even just leaned forward. The new support is better with the addition of a length of pool noodle to lift it up a little. Not perfect, but at least it no longer needs regular readjusting!

MrsTea is 'soldiering on' until we can find her a suitable 'Sciatica cushion' of some type, one which does not slide around like the pillows & cushions we've tried. Will wait to see if we can find a local option in/around Cairns when we are living a bit closer next year before we drive up the Cape rather than taking a punt onan unknown ebay/online offering .......... unless anyone has a specific recommendation?

Nihao Cuppa mate!
1.5hrs ish hills drive to Tullamarine, 9.5hrs to the Orient, 2hrs train thereafter and repeat again back home tomorrow.
I do love my portable ‘Roho’ for Sciatica, ‘Mosaic’ I believe scored at least half price years ago although did find adding a good 500mmX500mm ish Aussie Sheepskin under its cover for Cattle class adventures helps farts sneak out silent yet muffled :-)

Hey Cuppa, I have a 2013 Y61 it has lumber support for the driver seat. I don't know if your seat has that??

I'm guessing you have, but have you looked at the seats in any of the Ti models???

When I last priced a stratos ltss for the driver there wasnt much change from $2500,
plus having a ute configuration might not allow full recline or aft positions.
I did have a lumbar cushion years ago you just pump up any orepeadic shop should have a full range
I would be looking for documents relating to any seat or product of being beneficial to your back.
Who know it may be past repair
