GQ Specific Issues and Spares for Trip

Hi all,

I'm just making a list of spares and repair items for my trip in two weeks.

Does anyone know of specific GQ trouble areas I should watch out for and take spares in case?

My friend on the trip is advising me to pack so many spares it would rival my fuel budget for the trip.

Where are you going? what engine? what is your mate driving? How long are you going for?

Yeah, I had a read through quite a few of the old ones, and I used them to formulate my list - commons spares and all that.

Just wanted to know if GQ's had any common offroad faults that would require I buy parts for before I leave. As a far as I can see, there's not much I think I'll need.

Red Centre Way, Oodnadatta Track, Alice Springs. However, thats from NSW - about 6,500kms in total.

Maverick/Patrol 4.2 Diesel N/A

My mates driving a colorado, not to many common spares.

Only a few weeks, but there will be lengths of time that a quite remote.

Replace all of your belts and Hoses NOW. keep what is on the car as Spares. Makes No sense to take new belts and hose away as spares. dont wait for failure. Fuel Filter for sure. A couple of trailing arm bushes, a couple of radius arm bushes. a couple of shock bushes. Zip Ties, Gaffa Tape and WD40. #SendiT

Make sure your tyres are good and adjust pressures accordingly a speedy seal kit or similar is not a bad idea and compressor. Most problems from this kind of touring comes from too much weight and corugations for hours on end. Make sure the Colorado isn't ridiculously overloaded see a lot of dual cabs with bent chassis out that way, if it's reasonably packed will be fine. All the best, enjoy ! . .

In terms of the various bushes you mentioned, this is what I was thinking:

Trailing arm bushes x 2

If I were buying bushes for spares I'd fit them before I went away, then I know everything should be OK. Do the changes at a minimum 4 weeks before you leave and make sure you drive the vehicle as often as possible to make sure all the new fitted bits and pieces are fitted properly.

If you replace your hoses, I wouldn't bother taking spares, new hoses shouldn't wear out or burst.

Cable ties are good for lots of things, but you'll need wire if your exhaust hangers break.

Engine oil, don't know if you'd need brake fluid??

I carry 2 spares, but I can't remember the last time I had a puncture. That being said I always pack tyre plug kit.

The very best thing you can do is to keep your vehicle as light as possible, you really don't need alot of stuff. It reduces the strain on your vehicle and also helps with fuel consumption.

If you run big tyres, maybe look at fitting something smaller eg: 32s instead of 35s.
