Was working the wee hours on this too. Think I started the cut around 6:30pm sunday "arvo" haha. I know I rolled in home at nearly 10pm sooo.... Was a busy day on the farm then back up to this log and then home.

It works well. Now to build myself one so I can punish it hahaha. I am chasing some parts for me old Stihl 048 to get it fired up again.

I do think of both you guys mudrunner and @MB. MB I have been really naughty to you. I will schedule some time for it very soon. My biggest problem is transporting everything I need there. Might have to steal ya beastly van 1 arvo n pickup the gear from bayswater I need.

I had that above reply sitting and forgot to press send and come back to a heap of replies lol.

Peebee mine site spec vs electrical spec is MUCH different. We have been going through it a lot at work lately. Mining even has a whole aus standard above and beyond AS3000 (electrical standards we work to).

Basically in VERY simple terms the gen can be hooked up. Has nothing to do with incoming as your not allowed to pump any pwer back into the grid with a gen.

So pending what he wants to do exactly with it, it can for sure be connected to the main switchboard but will need local circuit breaker to the machine and a change over switch. The MEN your talking about is another issue. Nothing much to do with the generator as the MEN link is in main switchboard most of the time.

Remote start might be very hard on this machine. Usually they need some sort of running pickup also to stop cranking. Eg RPM over whatever the startmotor can supply but it is possible. There are controllers out there but likely go over Markies budget on this.

Quick easy basic connection is not super complex.

I have actually been looking into it for Nicco to recently along with a setup for my own house.

Just got a chainsaw chain grinder. Had a few chains destroyed by hitting hidden nails and rocks inside trees and figured I'd have a crack at repairing them with this.
Completely destroyed the first chain, sort of destroyed the second and did a good job on the third. Was only cheap, just under $100 delivered from Edisons.

I have the same unit. I find it works well but I still give the chain a quick touch up with a file when I fill up.
Problem with filing is that you can’t do exactly the same movement left and right so I run the chain on the machine when it starts to not cut straight.

Will continue to do that exclusively until a chain gets rocked out and the grinder will be for repair work.
If I repair 3 chains then the machine will have paid for itself.
Next time I need to buy new chains I will buy a roll of Stihl chain and a spinner/breaker.

I would say its quicker for me, and I have typically used the hand file with the precision slide set-up to get tooth length consistent, but admit I have not factored in the raker height adjustment - just straight out tooth grinding. I accumulate all my chains and do 10+ at a sitting. For me, after also checking the bar lands for same heights - Volorb? have a great hand tool to sort that out, I get a great straight cut and the chains last longer. I am still on the original grinding wheel as well.

Won’t disagree that hand filing/sharpening freehand is by far the best outcome and therapeutic found when time permits :-)
Our elecy spinners are fantastic though for a super quick licking when time poor but can overheat steel if too heavy handed.
Fastest way on our block resting saws I know of on my bullbar next to the battery buzzing out an accidental staple/wire spark encounter too :-)

Interesting. On a saw blade a straight cut tooth (chisel tooth) is for ripping along the grain. The angle cut tooth is designed to slice the grain and cut. Effective cross cut. A straight chisel cut blade doesn't slice the grain in front of the cut.

So the straight cut blade cuts faster on a chainsaw? What tooth design is used for slabbing?

OK, new Cigweld 185 arrived this morning - Sunday delivery - Aust post must be really overloaded. Anyway, unpacked it, then down to Total tools for wire and gas, quick read of the manual and guide for parameters and what a difference to the little Rossi. This is just like it should be, really happy. the gas bootle cost was a bit of a slug though, but I now own the bottle (E size, $475 - ouch), but wire was on special.

Way back in 1997 we were camped at jacks waterhole in the Kimberley next to a guy from Sydney with a brand new landcruiser and a brand new jayco. He recounted the story about his fuse blowing hassles with the jayco from pick-up. Could not keep the main breaker from tripping on his way from Syd to Alice, so at some time along the road he pulled the breaker out and jammed a 1/4" bolt into the jaws, which fixed it for a while then something else 'big blew' and he lost all power. Getting to Alice he found a service agent and the van was booked in. They eventually found a large tek screw right thru the middle of a major cable. Lucky it didn't all go up in smoke, but he was 'oh so proud' of his electrical mastery - as I am at times!!!

Hahahaha. Legend. After i fitted the front mount cooler on the GUIV i had done a fair bit of work to the car at once. it started blowing the parker fuse. That is a MOFO of a circuit and is huge and all over the car. every light on every switch. Damn it. i pulled the centre of the dash out chasing that fault for hours and hours. It really dd my head in. what a nightmare......

Several Hours later....... Dash all over the place...... Inspection mirror in my hand with a torch shining through looking into every nook and cranny looking for a short. Damn it to Hell. Ready to give in and take it to an Auto Elec knowing he was going to redo everything i had spent the day doing was really pissing me off. Of all the circuits! this was the Beast.

Faarrrkkking Thing!!! I mounted the Winch solenoid to the front of the radiator support panel.... With a couple of Tek Screws... Shut Up. I Know. anyway. Bugger me. running along the underside of the top radiator support panel is a bloody Loom and one of those tek screws disappeared into it, i just caught a flash of it in the mirror by chance. I removed the tek screw (3 seconds) and the short was gone... I didnt even bother pulling the Loom out, I got a lucky break.

Tek screws Rock. Just know what is behind the panel.

I rented an E bottle for a couple of years thinking it was the way to go. $20 a month it added up quickly when i was months between uses. I ditched it a few months ago when i went ot use it for the first time in 6 months (6x$20 is $120 for it to sit there) and got 10 minutes into the project and ran out of Gas!!!Damn! i paid rental on an empty bottle. Nah its smaller.

The stupid thing about the rental is the refill is cheaper. $75 or so for a refill. No charge to put back. I could have just returned it for 6 months at no charge and grabbed another for $75. Would work out cheaper to give back a half full bottle for 6 months at a loss and grab a new fill when needed but who is that organised. Not me.

Wholeheartedly agree on the gas bottle purchase system. The rental on my E size bottle had reached $210/year and I didn't use a bottle in a year doing only hobby stuff. When I bought my first AC/DC TIG 4 years ago, I bought the argon E size bottle outright then thought, bugger it, might as well get the MIG bottle too. Yes, it hurts the pocket but it works out better over time.
Since owning the TIG I've done a lot less MIG so I've only swapped the MIG bottle once in 4 years.

The gas pressure in the fire extinguisher is the same as in a normal cylinder. Carbon dioxide is no different. I put the pressure at the outlet about 0.2. I'm still just learning, but I like the seam.
Just turn the fire extinguisher upside down

I was more interested in the quality of the CO2 and any impurities that might be introduced. i would think there is not as close attention to the quality of the CO2 as opposed to that supplied as an inert environment for welding, but if it works and welds look good and strong, must be ok, I will certainly keep this in the back of my mind for future use though.

Being a pressure vessel, yes they do. Whilst you buy and own 'the bottle' its at your discretion as to whether you refill it specifically and retain that bottle or simply do a swap out. You can buy brand spanking new bottles also instead of from a fleet. I will check the expiry on mine in due course and ensure it is swapped out before expiring just in case there is some push back. At the end of the day its a straight forward process to get the bottle retested and re-certified also, costs about $50 from memory.

Hey Phil, were do you get bottles recertified? I've got a bottle, the shape of which I've never seen anywhere, it is old, at least 30, maybe closer to 40 years.

Hey Phil, were do you get bottles recertified? I've got a bottle, the shape of which I've never seen anywhere, it is old, at least 30, maybe closer to 40 years.

I just rang the supplier of the my bottles, Speedigas in NSW. They distribute from NSW. They said the bottles have an expiry date, waiting for a return call on what that is, however because they only do a gas bottle exchange process, the bottle you buy has already been retested and certified each time its refilled by them. the manufacture date must trigger some internal company processes to then do further thickness testing after some period, say 10 yrs , at a guess. They did however clear up a discrepancy re the gas bottle ownership program in that I cannot get that bottle specifically refilled as they don't have a refill facility in VIC, all their bottles get refilled and tested in NSW, trucking back and forth across the country.

I asked about the process of exchange or retesting of any gas bottle, and they only would accept a Speedigas bottle on an exchange program. If its from one of the other 4 gas suppliers, elgas, boc etc, they would likely take the bottle as an exchange, and then carry the risk of it being servicable or not, or reject it outright and refuse to swap it. i think I would simply ring around and find the right person to clarify the test process. It wasn't that difficult, but the cost is the new valve head, visual internal inspection and then if they hydrotest it or not or ultrasonic thickness testing - each probably has their own process. i will revert when I have details on the perceived life of a bottle, but for unfired pressure vessels, its a combination of wall thickness and wall thickness degradation over time and thats about it - if the wall thickness falls within the guidelines and it holds pressure, good to go. I think you might have to take one on a rental program, but could be wrong. At a minimum I would spruce it up a bit before swapping it out!

Only thing to watch is not over stressing the threads when you pull them up. I installed some hinges on the 60l engel this weekend and used the riv nut set, like you have, and got a bit casual with the amount of pull up force and stripped one out. Took 5 mins to drill the bugger out then, lucky i could, if space was limited could have been another PeeBee cluster self generated. Best thing though.

FWIW:
If you find you’ve accidentally stripped one (Rivnut) fastest way to remove it we’ve found is to simply grind the head down slowly until it pops off like a washer.
Doesn’t seem to affect the surrounding paint but its only downfall is the internal part of the RivNut has a new forever home inside floating around if it’s a sealed cavity.

I’ve got a shed full of tools but this would have to be up there as one of the most useful.
Bought this over ten years ago for about $2. It’s got me out of trouble heaps of times and made life much easier.

I’ll always remember the day I heard that dreaded ‘ting’ as I pulled the rag out of the turbo input to reconnect the hose. Nearly put my neck out of joint looking for that elusive nut I’d idiotically left laying in the engine bay. Torches and a flexible USB camera couldn’t find it, had to get a lift home after dark and stressed all night.

A new day and a bit of poking about with my $2 special and the nut appeared, stuck between the engine block and the turbo. Didn’t fall into the opening after all, but was hiding behind it.

Maybe time to buy another, as it’s held together by tape these days.

I bought one of the magnetic head sticks with the straight extendable arm and also one with the bendy stuff and as MB has said, the V8 seems to have a huge appetite for anything you are trying to install - all ends up under the Octopus. I have recovered everything to date, except stainless. For that, provided I can se it, I have a bendy stick with the push out prong grabs - they open up to about a 20mm mouth with 4 arms, perfect device. had it for 6 yrs, used it once! - but the bit I dropped was a 'one only' and it wasn't an option to simply turn around and get another part from the bench. I would take a photo but it needs 2 hands to operate, and have not eaten enough chicken to grow a third.
Like this one only has the bendy dody and its about 600mm long

Pussies sniff MEK....(cut and pasted below)
2-Butanone is a manufactured chemical but it is also present in the environment from natural sources. It is a colorless liquid with a sharp, sweet odor. It is also known as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). 2-Butanone is produced in large quantities. Nearly half of its use is in paints and other coatings because it will quickly evaporate into the air and it dissolves many substances. It is also used in glues and as a cleaning agent. 2-Butanone occurs as a natural product. It is made by some trees and found in some fruits and vegetables in small amounts. It is also released to the air from car and truck exhausts

This is part of my Milwaukee setup in the work ute. A reciprocating saw, 2 grinders, jigsaw, drill, impact driver, 1/2 in rattle gun, and heat gun. All these have been used and abused. Not shown is a Vacuum cleaner, Rotary hammer drill, multi tool, router and blower.
I also have a whipper snipper at home.

The batteries on the left are hanging off those Ebay battery holders. I have 3 x 4a/h, 5 x 5a/h, 6a/h, 8a/h and a 12a/h

The lone battery on the top right corner plugs into one of the Ebay 3D printed power adapters and it powers the lights I have set up in the canopy

The tools are hanging off some Bunnings stuff that is lasting longer than I thought it would.

Maybe late to the party but this supercheap "engine cleaner gun" is fantastic. Filled with degreaser and sprayed under engine bay, drivetrain and all rubber parts have come up nearly as good as new, certainly much cleaner than I have ever got it all before.

Have managed to firstly this morning poke a rusty old bit of fencing wire through the rear slasher contraption larger tyre and successfully patched it with this mini wheels Slime tyre kit:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2020/12/147.jpg
A few hours later found a sneaky laying star picket hidden in some blackberries and pierced a little front tyre with a triangular shaped cut now.
Added some extra Slime goo in to assist the round wick being an irregular cut not a hole but will still only hold to a max of 10psi I keep finding out there.

I’d say this hedge trimmer attachment would max out at about 8-10mm thick woody “trees” though as it took a bit of encouragement on the ends where I hacked it right back a bit too deep.

Well that is shit mate, s that fence 1 piece or Two? Surely it is 2 and it can me realigned? if it is 1 then how did this happen? If you need to use this and cant adjsut t to realign it then ut another fence on the front of it and pack it our mate. Re-fence it in a single piece with packers then cut the fence with the blade and you will get the job done no worries.

Agreed. I have never needed compressors to remove and refit springs. Whether they were 5" springs or 2" heavy duty springs.

It simply makes changing the springs easier if they are shorter to begin with, especially when working off the garage floor. I apply the spring clamp to the compressed spring when the weight is on it, nip it up, then remove the wheel, jack up the chassis and lower the axle, spring pops out with minimal effort, then reverse the operation. I have limited headroom also with a garage door that covers half the car body and i have perhaps 40mm clearance between roofrack and garage door. Its not about trying to compress the spring, just maintain a shortened length.

Jack the chassis up, remove the wheels, drop the axle on the deck mate. You should have plenty of room.

I get fitting them while the weight is on, if you just needed to remove for maintenance and refit then all good, but using them to compress the next spring is my concern. They work, but i don't think they are needed mate

Darren, there was no next spring, it was the same spring going straight back in. I don't have the head room to jack the vehicle any higher. i accept what you are saying, but it just does not relate to the circumstances I was working with. I made some basic errors when doing this task, as follows - The biggest issue I have with the spring compressor is the stored energy that is magnifying as the coil is compressed, and that energy is not really apparent as the coil compresses until you start to see the threaded bar bending. Its is a very dangerous bit of kit for sure, especially if used without regard to the danger, but it can serve a purpose.
ERROR 1 -For the record I did remove the coil compressor once the coil was out of the car simply to re-align the clamps to 180 deg.for a better more level compression across the coil. This is where I came unstuck as I obviously over tightened the coil, despite measuring it in its compressed state.
ERROR 2 - When I went to release the coil, I also should have ensured the full weight of the vehicle was on it, like when it was removed - as the coil compressor was taking more load than original as it was still under single compression from the coil compressor, not the vehicle.

Your points are valid, just not workable for me at that time. If i was doing it without the overhead limits i could have easily jacked the vehicle higher and dropped the axle down a bit further - it was sitting on a trolley jack fully down anyway.

nissannewby

MB They are used a lot when changing shocks in road cars due to them being coilover shock absorbers. You need to compress the spring before undoing the top cap. Remove shock, fit new shock with compressed spring and reinstall top cap. Then release spring compressors. Nearly all road cars that are around use this system..

Cheers Phil,

Yeah your scenario is basically what I said in the second half of.my post. If yoy are removing springs for maintenance and then refit all good. But using them to remove then fit New springs can get scary. All good mate, you are a long way from being a goose mate, you are all over it.

No brainer mate. Return it next time a new model comes out. Aldi are great for returns.

That is actually a really handy tool. Can imagine it would be popular with cockies and others who might need a pressure washer away from 240v and mains water.

Not so much a tool but should be in everyone’s tool kit.
Never Seize/ Anti Seize.

This is why use should use Never Seize on all you suspension arm bolts. The left is what it looks like just removed that was covered in Never Seize prior to fitment four years ago. The bolt on the right is another removed bolt and the old Never Seize cleaned off. Like brand new still. Plus the bolts were easy to remove.

Just recently I discovered 'Torque Sticks' for the first time .... discovered as in read about them.

Would love one of those battery operated rattle guns, was looking at the Makita DTW700Z a 'mid torque model, lighter in weight than it's bigger brothers but still with a nut busting torque of 1000NM (I also learned that 'nut busting torque' is a higher torque applied during the first few ugga duggas before reverting to the tools 'normal' max torque ..... in this case 700NM.

BUT I want it to save my back. For undoing wheel nuts, a 1.2 metre length of water pipe makes the job fairly easy (albeit slower than a rattle gun - time is something I have plenty of). The hardest part though is the final grunt when doing up the nuts with a standard cross brace. For me it's now a real back killer.

That's where the torque sticks came in - a means of limiting the torque & thus enabling the doing up of wheel nuts with a rattle gun without risk of overtightening - "you beauty" I thought.

But no - disappointment was to follow.

In spite of what a few sellers would have you believe they really are not suitable for the battery powered impact drivers. With air rattle guns yes, but not the cordless ones.

Having understood how they work, by 'twisting' & returning to their unstressed position between impacts, I now understand why they don't work well with cordless rattle guns.Unlike air rattleguns the ugga duggas on the cordless are just too fast, & don't give the twisted extension bar a chance to 'relax' & return to the fully untwisted state between each ugga dugga (impact).

Consequently there is quite a risk of overtightening. I have also read reports of shortened life of battery operated rattle guns because of the physical 'feedback' impact from the extension bar.

So best I can do is continue with the water pipe extension & get MrsTea to do the final 'grunt' tightening of each nut and in the meantime keep watching the rattle gun market & hope sooner or later one is developed which can apply a preset torque with reasonable accuracy.

Ah well it was a nice dream whilst it lasted.

You can adjust speed & level of impact, but not torque setting. Only way to avoid risk of overtightening is to use the rattle gun to undo the nuts & spin them off & to spin them back on lightly & finish off with a wheel brace or torque wrench.

I suppose that with practice & familiarity with a cordless rattle gun it may be possible to get the torque of the wheel nuts in the good enough/ballpark, but the risk of stretching/breaking studs is high whilst gaining that familiarity & how many of us do it regularly enough to have the confidence we are getting it right each time. Bottom line is that cordless rattle guns are still no good for doing up, only undoing

The torque sticks apparently work fairly well with air rattle guns because their impact rate is lower.

The local tyre place found, very quickly, that using these to tighten the nuts from the start, can over rev the gun and cause the torque stick to shatter when it comes to a hard stop. They used a normal extension to nip up the nut, swap to the torque stick and do the final torque.

Basically they act like torsion suspension. They take time to twist and spring back with each hammering they receive from the rattle gun. This reduces the peak torque the gun produces.

Seeing a mechanic just zipping up a wheel nut grates on me.

I was taught to do the lug nuts up to just a few threads before they are tight. Wiggle the wheel while finger tightening the nuts to make sure they are seated before the final torque. Then take the vehicle for a short drive and re-torque the nuts.

I also re-torque the nuts after someone else has replaced the wheels.

Hi pearcey, doesn't really matter, whatever I have at hand, if it looks about the right size, I'll use it/bend it.

If you bend one using dies for the other, does it stuff the material up???

What happens is that the tube or pipe will tend or will spread or flatten in the bend. This may not be a problem for you depending on what your application is. If its just a bend thats rough enough so be it. Me I have both tube ranging from one eight of an inch to inch and a half and pipe from one quarter to two and a half inch. I also have a few odd metric sizes. Back in the day my job required accurate no crush forms.

yeah, all good, I just need to bend stuff, so doesn't sound a like a problem for me.

I have so much respect for folks who work with metal as a trade, there are so many great skills that you guys pick up, improve upon and openly share. I say metal, coz I way prefer working with steel rather than wood. I reckon it goes back to early school days when I was absolutely crap at woodwork, but just crap at metal work, so I guess I have a leaning towards steel work coz of that.

But hey, wood guys are just as great, there is certainly no doubt, I have as much respect those guys as well. I work much more with steel, so it's probably more front of my mind.

Have you seen those T shirts around at the moment? Shows a guy doing some stick welding and the slogan is " I say to myself, what a wonderful weld" pretty funny I reckon.

Couldn't resist.
It's fair quality, I'd be unhappy if I paid full price, but $186 delivered isn't bad.

Have you folded anything yet??http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/28.jpg

nice one, Yeah i have used it to bend some 1.5mm sheet metal which is actually beyond the limit fo the specs. At the time i thought it was struggling a little to be fair but it got it done, then checked the specs and respected that i was asking more than i should out of it. i was only bending smallish brackets with it so kept them close to the bolt end and it got it done OK.

I then used it to bend some 3mm Ally plate and it did this pretty easy. For what i want it will well and truly get it done for me. The 3in 1 machine i was looking at had removable sections of blade that allowed for smaller box folding but only went to 90 degrees. THis absolutely bends to 120 which is a winner for me.

I agree, $180 is a good buy.

I agree, $180 is a good buy.I'll be using it mostly for aluminium, so I'm pleased to hear that it'll do 3mm. That's great.

I might be able to do something with this that I was thinking I might need to get done on a larger machine.

That Shear on the other hand is Pretty Bloody Good mate!!! i have used it to cut the same 1.5mm sheet metal, needed to trim a heap of brackets taking 5mm off one end. Glorious! I then used it on the 3mm Ally plate and it ate that up prettty easy too. Beast of a thing. Really needs to be bolted down though to give it a red hot go which mine is not but stoked so far.

You need to buy an engine stand now to mount it on. So you can be fully mobile with it for long sections and bending. Also can utilise the ability to rotate the bender for tight area manipulation.

very nice gear. A long time ago, I was dead keen on making custom front bars for 4x4's and had a very good look at that speedwerx stuff, it's very nice. The idea never got anywhere. Congrats Daz.

Not really tools, probably cheap and nasty too but for $30 from Autobarn today for this 325pc scrivet/clippy set I’m not complaining.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/73.jpg
Way too many old vehicles around the property that when I even look at their clippy’s they drop out [emoji23]

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkFor future reference matey, MudRunnerTD has put up similar advice before which I followed. I bought this this lot for $10 each box and $5 for the random mixed bag off Amazon.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/77.jpg

I’ve gotta start remembering the top advice on here 🥲
Was so proud today bargain finding as Nissan Lilydale once charged me I think $140 for about 11 x scrivets for the scuttle panel on the family GU leaking firewall debacle [emoji2959][emoji23]
