View Full Version : Recovery points bolt type

Hi all, was reading some info on the net re bolt types for recovery points, tow bar mountings and roo bar mounting. From what I have read, all mounting points should be high tensile. I just had a look at my front recovery and rear tow bar mounts (all done by a local 4x4 centre) and they are all galvanised mild steel ?? Should these be high tensile? What has everybody else got? The Y61 wagon is mounting a Hayman Reese tow hitch and Iron Man front recovery points that also hold the roo bar in place. Any thoughts ??

Should definatly be high tensile especially for those applications. Have you got a pic, not sure if high tensile is ever gal but should have a code on the head either a number or lines. Usually high tense will be black silver or gold zinc.

na these are just plain old generic galv bolts and nuts ... really peed off as this was fitter by a certified Ironman store .. the misses has the car but when shes back I shall take pics ..

the bolts read MY129 and TDF 8.8 if that helps any

Looks like they're grade 8.8 high tensile silver zinc coated so all good.

Yeah, Millweld installed 8.8 zinc on my bar.
I don’t believe you should use any higher grade tensile due to shearing potential and never stainless steel for this and its reaction with the other bar metals.

Strongly recommend you use only Zinc plated grade 8 bolts from 12mm up.
Not 100% sure 10mm and 8mm are available in grade 8, happy to be wrong.
would also suggest everyone look at what holding their towbar in place, with
river crossings and mud they could be corroded. re-do with the proper bolts
or you may rip the tow assembly off, not unheard of
