I want to change the engine oil and filter on my 98 4.5 GU for the 1st time, can anyone tell me how much oil it takes and what weight/type of oil to use. I have a manual but it is a bit knocked around, i can see where it states a TB42S is 7.5 litres. Is mine a TB42S ?? Be patient with me, i've only had the truck a week.:icon_bonk:

Hi Peter,
5W-30 is the preferable viscosity diesel oil. If that isn't available, you can use 10w-30, 10w-40 or 10w50. Brand is entirely up to you.. I think Oils ARE Oils, despite what the valvoline man says on the ads.
The average oil capacity is 6.4L with an Oil Filter change.
Without an Oil Filter change it's 5.8L.
Remember, those figures are average.
As for where it states TB42S -this relates to the 4.2L motor which has electronic fuel injection and electronic ignition.
Your would be the TB45. There's 2 types;
The TB45E means 4.5L engine, electronic fuel injection and electronic ignition.
The TB45S means 4.5L engine, carburettor and electronic injection.
Someone else might know a bit more than me so best to wait for another reply.
Cheers

Thanks Timbo, you say that 5W-30 is the prefered Diesel oil and if 5W -30 isn't available then use 10W-30 etc. Mine is not a Diesel engine ??

Sorry Peter, I'm so used to talking diesels hehe..
I would say 15w-40 would be good to use with your 4.5L petrol motor. I know someone who has used it.
But you can go on the Caltex website and do a filter search.

Quite good actually

I would like to know what brand of oil some of you are using, obviously Caltex gets a vote from Timbo's thread but, are most using fully synthetic or, part synthetic like the Castrol Magnatec and how often is everyone changing oils. I tend to overdo it with my bikes, is 10,000 km changes the norm ??

My service manual states :-
tb45e 7.6 litres with oil filter and 7.3 litres without filter
cold & warm climate 10w-30
hot climate 20w-40

With my VL, I only ever used the best I could afford which was usually full synthetic, really thin Castrol stuff, Shell or Mobil. I've tried pretty much all the brand names. I don't think there's much between them all when you're talking a 4.5L 4WD. Do you have a service manual? If you don't, check out some of the manuals on the forum.
