4500 blown head gasket

Hi folks,

Long time member / first time poster.

Today I confirmed that my 2000 4500, has a slight head gasket leak.

I’m now looking at pulling the head off, hopefully the head is not cracked but will need this tested.

Has anyone had this work done professionally and if so, what sort of $$ can I expect for drive in / drive out.

I’m on the sth side of brissy and keen to know if anyone can recommend where to buy a reco head (just in case) and a place to test the head for cracks.

Is a radiator additive such as "Nulons head gasket repair" to fix a small weep in a gasket, a bad idea? Or do they really work without any detrimental effects to the motor?

I used a similar product it did not work. the leak on my head was on the exhaust side of things
IMO I think it may clog water galleries but I cant say for sure, the head on my 3ltr was repairable

It's not a long term fix but my experience with them is that they work. In one of my old jobs we used a tub of silverseal every few months in a 20ton escavator and kept it going for a couple of seasons before it got some love.

Ok, so when they did get some love do you know if there was any ill effects from the addative? Such as residue through the cooling system?

silver seal is the number one . We used to put it in Water cooled VW engines worked a treat .

We're talking 10 plus years ago now but all i remember doing is tearing the head off, cleaning the face of the block and putting a reco head back on.

I don't recall having to do anything special to clean everything out and the block stayed together/on the machine.

Chuck a tub in and see how it goes i reckon.

Hi Alex , sorry mate, don’t come one much , but yes all went well and head was fine after the testing.

The rings / pistons to my surprised had absolutely no movement so I was impressed.

I think running it on LPG May have shorten the life of the head gasket to be honest.

For those interested i've got some feedback .
i went for it and put some of that gold coloured Nulons head gasket repair into my radiator to fix a leaking head gasket and 12 months later it's still holding and no ill effects anywhere else. No gunk build up in the radiator or over flow tank and haven't used any coolant since. Very happy.
