Anyone ever changed a 4.2petrol engine for a similar diesel in a GQ? My petrol engine with 213,000kms is still strong and works beautifully off-road, but is REALLY, REALLY thirsty.... Like I'm getting 2kms per litre on sand in high range!!!! Any advice, suggestions would be welcome - for example would I have to change the gearbox and tranny? Thanks guys

Hi mate, fixed the title for you.
Welcome to the forum, don't forget to post up an intro about yourself in the introductions section.
Ive never done it personally but the only advice I would give would be to get a donor 4.2 diesel car.
See the link below for a bit more info mate...

Check out Ebay guy up in Queensland has holley carb conversions big bucks but at around $2.00 a litre for unleaded should be worth the expense thats the way I am going too chase fuel economy

If your mech minded anything is possible
From previous reading gearbox & transfer & tailshafts are same configuration, you'll have to use the diesel clutch, bellhousing & engine mounts
then theres little things like wiring, Air con, & exhaust conection all in all it can be done but up to you if you have the time tools & patience

I've looked into it a bit with my Mav, It's a 4.2 auto and loves to consume fuel. From the info I found the deisels aren't that much better. I got good results from a few thing the best was when installing the snorkel I did away with the factory intake ducting and factory cleaner as they flow like S&*T, and the exhaust heats the duct which inturn heats the air passing through it, I ran new ducting over the front of the rocker cover and it stay's very cool and got a massive improvement especially on the hiway.
