View Full Version : Broken axles and rear wheel bearings

Guys, I am curious to know what sort of a pickle I would be in if I broke either a front axle, but not cv, or broke a rear axle? If I am out the bush, what is the bandaid to use to get home, assuming I am still in 4wd country? Also, there is plenty of discussion around the servicing of front wheel bearings, but never hear anything about rear wheel bearings - when should these be looked at from a preventative perspective?

Would front and rear air lockers help continuous crunchy drive?
Only axles I’ve ever blown were old Landcrab rears and thankfully they were full floating slide out bangers and could drag oneself home front wheel drive with Coke bottle rear hub seals usually done, environmentally oil loss friendly :-)

Rear Bearigs are a pressed on unit and not serviceable. I did try and get some dress grease in them when i did the rear diff though.

A Broken axle kinda sux and you would convert to 2wd to sort it out. Removal of the rear tail shaft if needed. I have broken a front axle in the bush but it was a shear break and other than loosing drive to wheel it was all god. I carried spare CV / Axles so i just swapped it out in the rain at 1am but all good. Of interest i then blew teh CV on theother side at 9am the following morning and swapped that out in a bog hole. Lol.

I carry a pair of front axles and CV prepacked in grease and bagged up tied to the bottom of the cargo barrier in the GQ. Works great.

Thanks Darren, I guess this stands the same for front axles as rears - I could leave busted axle in place, unlock front hubs, remove driveshaft so low range 2wd with rear locker might be possible?

Also so what's the recommended inspection for rear earnings? Say I was preparing for a big trip with a bit of weight on board- sort of like I have now- is it simply replace? Or what happens if they fail in the field- I carry spares but can they be swapped over on the side of a hill or road? What's would I need?

No the rears ar Pressed on. The was an Old member many years ago that was a field service agent and he did a write up on getting it done in thefield. It is on the forum somewhere.

So, is there a solution to driving out if you break a rear axle? I understand the tailshaft can be removed however if the axle is broken and its attached to the hub and wheel, wont things come to a halt pretty quickly? Has anyone overcome this issue in the field without having to be towed out?
