2005 Nissan Patrol 3.0 litre turbo diesel blowing black smoke under load

Just did a long trip across to Broome from Brisbane via Plenty Hwy and Tanami Desert. Somewhere along the way my Patrol has started blowing black smoke when under load. I was towing a camper trailer of 1 tonne and had possibly another half tonne in the car. I have had it to my mechanic a few times and he can't seem to nail the problem. He did find an issue with two short hoses in the turbo area that were cracked and worn so they were replaced and the problem did stop for a short while but has returned. I am a novice when it comes to mechanical problems so any advice I can get I would gladly appreciate.

Welcome mate was the Plenty Highway still shit between Jervois and Tobermory? Black smoke is better than blue smoke so it must be fuel and a bit too much but having said that plenty of wound up diesels throw a bit of black smoke when you put the foot down .

If it stopped when those hoses were replaced I would be checking for any soot around the fittings, check if loose and tighten fittings and go for a drive to check as a first.

Hmmm... sounds like the boost might be low due to leaky/poor/blocked hose/s to the Turbo OR dreaded dirty MAF.

I'd do as suggested, check the fittings and hoses etc and clean the MAF sensor.

As stated. Black smoke is over fueling. So check and clean the air flow meter, check all boost hoses and clamps, and check the intercooler for boost leaks. If i has oil deposits on the intercooler, this usually means its leaking boost pressure.

Welcome to the forum mate, I think the other guys have hit the nail on the head, definitely sounds like it is over fueling.
