Hey all, probably a stupid question but i'm new to the 4wd scene and have fell in love with the look of the Patrol TD42 GU II. My question is, would it be a stupid idea to buy one as obviously the latest model is 06 so it's quite old or should I buy the 3L? Is there much power difference between the two? and are there many known issues with the 4.2 and the 3? Cheers.

Plenty of folks with 4.2's & 3.0's that are happy with their cars.

I chose an '06 4.2 at higher cost than I could have bought a later 3.0 for.

Why? I wanted a vehicle which was lower tech & less dependant upon computer sensors, making it more easily fixable in remote areas. I also like the TD42's reputation for longevity/keeeping on keeping on.

Those who are 'hardcore' about their 4wd'ing seem to prefer the off road characteristics of the 4.2. I've never driven a 3.0 off road, but I often think about how well my motor manages rough going.

They (4.2's) are getting older, but there are still plenty around with 200k or less on them, & they are generally thought of as being good for 500k+ without the need for major work.

It was the early 3.0's which had the reputation for 'grenading', most still out there seem to do ok, especially if treated to NADS mods (plenty on this if search this forum).

I would honestly go the 4.2 reason why are Easy to fix fully mechanical, driveline is bullet proof and they go good once ya put a tune and 3 inch dump and exhaust things can pull anything.

I may be biased as I own a 4.2 but the 3l i drove of my mates didn’t have that real torquey truck feeling.

Also if you want even more power you can get a 12mm pump I’ve not done this but seen some animals around with them not sure how reliable with that pump fitted they are with a bigger turbo but surely someone here would know.
