Hello to you all, I have a TD42TI and it is giving me the shits.
I have many years experience with operating running and repairing almost everything from minis to dumptrucks but this electronic hybrid injector pump thingy has got me thinking.
Starts ok in mornings and when it has sat for a while. runs ok but gutless at low revs, more so than the normal 4.2 lack of grunt. When it is hot it will not start unless glowed for ten secs or so. When it starts it again is gutless but more so than usual. Crash start and it fires immediately and has more grunt.
Info on the VE style pump with the electronic control does not appear easy to come by.
I need to spend some time on it but as i work in the bush time is not that easy to get so I am doing the research first.

New fuel filter, primer pump is hard, no tiny gauze filter below the inlet banjo.
Best way o describing the gutlessness would be as to liken it to a petrol motor and when it gets a few revs up the advance kicks in. Does this electronic control unit do that as well as metering and a few more things?

Any ideas or pointers will be most welcome.

Welcome to the forum , bugger all info on pumps for one who is game (stupid) enough to play with them so most go to a specialist .
Having said that hopefully someone will know what your problem is .

I probably didn't explain the issue too well. My wife does tell me that my brain and mouth, or in this case typing lack of skill, are not very well connected!

I don't think the issue is the pump itself, I am sure it is a sensor input to the ECu or the ECu itself, but the question o course, which one?

I will do some more reading and look at the manuals over the next week while I am out bush and need some light reading before bed.

Thanks for the welcome

Ok I have done a lot of reading on the beast and managed to find the relevant sections in the online manual. The SM2E Y61FG1 bulletin has all about the ECU from page545 onwards.

As I read through the section I discovered that the ECU was able to utilise the electric fan even though the AC wasn't on. A few months ago I noticed the fan running and wondered why but as usual I was busy doing something else and put that in the "find out about it later file". I also saw that the power for the tacho is also supplied via the ECU, so the occasional time the tacho hasn't worked at startup would appear to be related to the ECU power being dodgy. Both of these have been intermittent so were not high up on the work it out now list.
The plan from here forward is to unplug everything ECU related one by one, clean and reassemble. The temp sensor which could be at fault has been ordered and will turn up in due course although I am still inclined to think it is a connection issue. I have had many issues in the past out here in the red dust country with sensors and plugs not making reliable connections so will try them first.
I was astonished to see Nissan's idea of a curled piece of wire on the probe of a multimeter being recommended. Cat have been selling adaptors since day one of electronics and this level of crudeness from Nissan was very amateurish.
Nissan diagnostics are in line with Cat, Volvo, Komatsu etc. voltages and resistances under specific conditions make for reliable diagnostics.
I won't be back in town with any time to spare for a few more days so I will report what I find, if anything, when that happens.
Also where would be the best place to move this thread to as it is no longer a Gidday thing.
Thanks

Welcome mate, hopefully you can get all your issues sorted out :smiley_thumbs_up:

Best place to start a new thread relating to your dramas would probably be in here: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/forumdisplay.php?18-Auto-Electrical
