View Full Version : Check plate..

I've seen a few rigs with check plate on the door panels. I would like to put on all the doors and possibly use for most of the trim where there was carpet.

What is the process?
Is this something that would be done by an upholsterer or a metal worker?

Mate of my sons has a massive 3D printer and has printed him up some door cards for a GU ute which not only look good are as tough as nails , not sure if he does GQ or that pattern .

Would be handy to find somewhere up here that could do the same. I know a steel joint that has a massive plasma cutter that could cut the material to shape and I was originally thinking along those lines. Never considered 3d printing.

Where are you? My cousin produces them, he has all the templates for the different models.
I hate the idea, it would get stinking hot in summer and burn your leg.

Yes might look tuff but going on a long trip especially in the heat would see you swapping them out I reckon .

I'd think twice about putting form over function unless it's not for a daily driver

Just the thought of checkerplate in our ute doors makes me both sweat & shiver ............. visions of driving inside an oven ... or a fridge in cold conditions! ;) Not to mention I reckon the higher in-car noise levels would make conversation harder.

The 'pressed board/masonite-like' door skins from the factory probably do a fairly reasonable job of not 'drumming' or amplifying sounds. Interested to know the 'qualities' of the material used for the 3D printed skins. If their material improves on the original re heat & sound insulation and provides something more durable to boot (who hasn't had those plastic fasteners pull out of the masonite?) they'd be onto a real winner. And if better door storage is added ... could be better still.

How much for 2 GU front doors? ;)

Agree with all heat points above mate for sure, competition hose out trucks would be best suited for checker plate would imagine.
Rarely do I wear shorts down here in Antarctica although could foresee debarking a kneecap whilst rushing out of the truck if ever up North climate too!

What can I do about arm rests and those little map holders that are usually attached to doors?

You can get some alright looking ones off eBay, would definately be my preference over checkerplate or ally sheet:
