Interesting variation for 9 inch LED driving lights.

1 lux at almost 1100 metres is better than most HIDs

then there's these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pair-9-inch-CREE-SPOT-LED-Driving-Lights-Offroad-Spotlights-Round-12V-24V-RED/323350523171?epid=8021482729&hash=item4b49316d23:g:hIIAAOSwAuZbSx8J:sc:AU_Stand ardDelivery!6169!AU!-1

I can't even see that far so would want to sacrifice a bit of range for more spread

.... aaaaand for the totally insane laser style https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pair-9-inch-CREE-SPOT-LED-Driving-Lights-4x4-Round-Spotlights-With-DRL-12V-RED/173322308878?epid=28021514925&hash=item285ad08d0e:g:C7UAAOSw7m9bDkWU

Could paint a Bat Signal on 'em and shine 'em at low clouds as well...

Serious question. How far is far enough? Do you really need to see 1km ahead at night? Why isn't 500m enough? I would thiink the level of illumination for a 1km sight line would render your vision useless when dropping to low beam for oncoming traffic.

What would be the best compromise for sight distance vs pupil dilation?

I doubt the driving lights on 'others' were actually turned on, if you compare the lit up poles on the RH side of the image. Plus, if your eyes are that crappy you can't pick up an obstacle with the 'others' lights at 500m, then being able to have 1 lux at 1000m aint going to help. Lastly, 1 lux is damn near pitch black anyway, hardly enough to be able to see anything at walking speed, let alone 100klm/hr.

FWIW-IME, Super bright lights around our neck of the woods seem to hypnotically attract Big Bouncing Bunnies, much like Moths to a naked dangerous flame!

I have Lightforce 50w HID on the front of the UG and they are rated to a couple of kms. I can tell you they are bright enough over length that you loose the fact there is a car in front of you and blare passed them until you engage the rear reflectors of the car then you feel bad. What is really average though it you then dip the light 1.5kms behind them and drive in the bloody dark until you catch them and overtake.

Our Vendor LEDLightCo sell a light very similar to the first link but without the defuser for spread. Spot down teh centre and the smaller LEDs for spread.. I was in there today, they look Sik!!
