View Full Version : Y61 Fuel tank breather

G'Day, I have a 2000 model wagon and have been having problems with air getting into lines and causing a miss in the engine, after changing hoses and filters etc I left the fuel cap loose and drove the vehicle. No air No miss, me thinks it may be the breather on the tank. Before I start pulling seats out, can anyone tell me where the breather may be. Thanks

From my understanding of a fuel tank breather, it only allows air to enter the tank above the fuel line, replacing the fuel volume that is used. I can't see how this apparent blockage' would affect the fuel delivery system. At least thats how mine works.

i agree with peebee, could it be possible that the breather is blocked and thats causing the tank to create a vacuum and the engine can suck the fuel?
ill tell a stock of something similar i had,
on my motor bike i had rust in the tank so i used a rust repair kit consiting of different cleaners and followed but a resin that coats the inside of the tank.
once i was done the tank was like new and i rode is short distances to work and all was great but on longer trips that used more fuel it started to die out and splutter.
i though spark? no fuel? more rust.. oh no.
eventually i tried opening the fuel cap like you and then i could ride forever with and open cap. turned out the resin i rolled around in the tank to seam it plugged up the breather.
easy fix go an old bicycle brake cable or a bonnet cable will work and flossed the breather pipe.
after all this i never had an issue.

you said you took the cap off and it good but no good with the cap on i would locate the breather and maybe run a new line or remove it at the tank and see if it runs well if so you have found the problem

The breather is in the rear drivers side wheel well. behind teh back wheel is an inner guard plastic that protects the fuel filler and the breather is there too.

My brother's hilux suffered poor running with a blocked tank vent - it wasn't drawing air into the injection system, more pulling a vacuum on the tank and making it super hard for the fuel to be drawn to the engine. A mud plug was found in the tank breather line. Its more likely to be a blockage at the breather end, as its dusty and that sticks to the diesel residue.

Totally agree ^^^^

Blocked tank breather is pretty much the first (and easiest) thing to rule out.
Not uncommon and can cause all sorts of weird symptoms.

Used to plug the breather on mates dirtbike for sh!ts & giggles. Took him ages to work out what was wrong. If it wasn`t that, a wet Tally-Ho under the spark plug cap had him swearing like a trooper.

Dad’s favourite trick was the old Tally-Ho Suzuki spitball too mate. He’d time the saliva to perfection for a 5km dry out caput! A sibling was too lazy to push home one day and when Dad returned, fessed up, then together returned to the hiden bike, whoops it was stolen/gone bye bye [emoji51]

Thanks champion that's the info I was after, You may have saved me 5 hours work, that I don't have time for.
