Looks like I've got a coolant leak but with my crappy eyesight I can't see where it's coming from. Any ideas?

Hey mate. Is that the Aircon compressor covered in coolant. It could be the very common zd30 coolant leak behind the timing cover.
Had the same on my 3L.

Yep, that's the A/C compressor. The leak looks like it's near the sandwich plate. It didn't leak much, but now I have to top up the coolant. I guess this will be an expensive fix... :(

How bad is the actual leak as in how much do you have top up and how often ??

My one was only leaking when very cold , especially during winter. Summer time I rarely noticed it. And when motor was hot and/ or running it never leaked.

That's a definite sign of the timing cover sandwich leak due to cold metal shrinking allowing gaps.

Also, for what it's worth.

I still know the guy who owns my 3L (sold it years ago). It is still leaking when cold/winter time.
I never fixed it and neither did he. Just a small top up every now and then, thats it.

So if yours is the same type of leak and very minor... might pay just to let it go and monitor??

When I initially found the leak I took it to nissan as I had a stat warranty on mine and they wanted the motor out, something to do with the sump ???
I can't remember.

Ofcourse, have a good look or get it looked at and MAKE sure it's not just a simply hose or clamp leak somewhere above and trickling down to the bottom.

I topped it up last Friday, drove to Canberra on Saturday, came back Sunday. Looked at it yesterday (Tuesday) and it's about 10mm below the Max line. Coolant is dripping onto the concrete. Not a lot, just a small patch...

Nothing worse than someone having a leek in your sandwich

I rinsed all the coolant off, went to the shops, let it cool overnight and checked this morning. No visible sign of the coolant leaking from the sandwich plate but it's still leaking somewhere, maybe a hose? I guess I need to take the alternator off to get a better look and that plastic inlet thingie for the turbo. Not being mechanically minded, is it easy to remove said pieces?

Sandwich plate removal is an engine out job. If it were me I wouldn’t worry about and and cover the area in a decent silicone. If it were pouring out. Then I’d fix it properly.
