Looking at getting a 3 inch straight through exhaust for a gu wagon td4.2t and a EGT fitted. What brand EGT to fit and roughly how much should the exhaust cost? Just a rough estimate is fine

Pipe will cost $600 - maybe $1400 for a top level stainless system. As for gauge, thats a tricky one. Just dont buy cheap. VDO, McNally and Redarc are the first three that come to mind.

As Mudski and others have kindly suggested, VDO & McNally are probably no doubt the ducks performance nuts! Redarc 3in1’s with their audible alarm for EGT Mrs MB settings are hopefully foolproof.

I have the Beaudesert 3" from turbo to the arse-end and the Redarc gauges. Cost a bit all up but it's a quality setup i like to think.

Just my 2c comment, based on numerous encounters and use of temp control instruments in industry, the important points are, regardless of who makes the items are 1) the thermocouple, the bit that sticks into the exhaust pipe, needs to be accurately calibrated against a range of known temps. A calibration certificate for that probe will ensure its accuracy; 2) the gauge and probe need to be individually matched or trimmed to the calibrated temps - a certificate of this that will ensure accurate indication. Matching of the indicated temp against a standard ensure accuracy, and is typically achieved using a trim pot or puk inside the gauge.; 3) don't mix and match makes or styles of gauges and thermocouples. Its likely the manufacturer works to a generic bulk calibration standard and simply matches the gauges to the standardised thermocouple - at the least this would give a degree of accuracy and repeatability, however does not really guarantee temperatures are what is indicated.

An instrumentation tech would use whats called a 'hotbox' that generates a known temperature as a standard and the EGT probe output is compared to the standard. the tech would then trim the trimpot in the gauge to match the calibrated temp. Depends on how accurate you want. I doubt that a variance of 10-20 deg would make any difference in the real world for the type of use the EGT is engaged

Ok lads so am I best of ordering my exhaust beau or red back? Then putting it in back of wagon with EGT to take to exhaust shop to be fitted? Also I hear dump pipe makes a massive difference so what dump pipe to order with it? My patrol has standard turbo

Whatever you buy,don't get an autotecnia one.
I've had nothing but problems with them.
6 probes under warranty,then when warranty was nearly out they got me to send the complete unit back for testing,sent me a new one, then that died as well.
No more warranty.
I did a bit of research on line about them...it's a common fault they know about but won't admit it.
Anyway that's my experience with them.
