2.8 4.2 Swap

Hi Patrol people my name is Richard
I'm entering into this forum thing
for the first time, ever.

I'm a QueeNZlander
Oldschool diesel mechanic
4 wheel driving for many, many years
Competed in 4x4 competion, super modified
Drove extreme 4x4 as a job,
groundspreading steep country, and survived.

I started my Patrol ownership about 15yr ago
with a 91 GQ shorty Safari 4.2 in NZ.
I had that for 10 years, bought it to Australia
with me and eventually, reluctantly, sold it here.
$1000 less than I'd bought it for 10yrs earlier.
What other vehicle could claim that.

Now I have come into possession of a 99 GU.
It had a partly dismantled LD28 which I have
hit the eject button on and now nestled neatly
in it's place is a TD42 (of course)
with a nice turbo upgrade.

The job is not complete electrically yet and that
is why I have joined this forum, hopefully I might
find some electrical conversion answers.

Looking forward to swapping knowledge.
Richard

Welcome and first thing to do is download the GU factory manual.

As yours is a 99 (sama sama mine) almost everything you will want is in the first two volumes.

After that the all knowing Forum should be able to answer any Q's you have.

Thanks for that, I have an Ellery repair manual,
do you say a factory manual will be more thorough.
What I'm looking for is a way to feed the ECU a correct
signal so it will continue to function the glow plugs
correctly. And also where's the best place to tap a Key-on
power for the fuel solenoid.

Grab a copy of the Factory manual from this forum here http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?4202-Nissan-Patrol-GU-Y61-service-manual-INC-Supplement-I-II-III-IV-V-VI-VII-amp-VIII

That will sort out 90% of your Q's for sure.

Have a read of the existing threads on 2.8 to 4.2 conversions should get you to 99% and for the 1% simply post the question up and the Guru's will help.

Probably post any conversion questions in the engine section rather than the eleccy section will be best and get a quicker answer

Welcome mate. Look up Killa Customs, he's in QLD and does loom conversions. He did mine, and it was just plug and pray. Worked a treat.

Here's an update, hope this is how you do update.
Mechanically everything installed all good, it's what I do.
Electrically mmm, I'm ok on the basic's but in this case
I'm swapping out a fly by wire, maximum input ECU motor
for the old school, 3 wires will do it TD42.
Someone suggested a ready made conversion loom, plug and
play. Very nice but 650$. I know I didn't need that level of assist.
So I nutted it out with a little help from a good auto sparkie.
The oil and temp sensors swapped from the LD28.
Starter signal wire was the same, the only other feed I needed was
for the fuel solenoid. I found the best one for that was the LD28
injection pump timing valve 12v feed.
Alternator and air/con work from the same loom, as does the gearbox.
The GU is up and running now, not road rego'd yet.
I did a 2" body lift at the same time and modified front and back bars
to suit.
