After being away from Patrols for about 3 or 4 years I decided it was time to buy another
So on Christmas Eve I bought this:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/04/125.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/JbiGSj)
The low down:
TB42 auto, stock as a rock except for an ARB non winch bar
It wasn't pretty but it was cheap, the young guy I brought it off had already done the head and rebuilt the front swivel hubs, so I'd already made my money back
Then I started fitting things to it, Rear drawers (out of a prado), cargo barrier
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/04/126.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/JbiGZU)
After the drawers it needed a lift, Stainless Snorkel, Roof racks and new wheels and tyres
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/04/127.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/JbiGVL)
This was it's first trip, at this stage I had only driven it 40km to get a RWC and back home so it was fingers crossed and just a camping weekend. Used it to get firewood but that's about it
What is it:
89 GQ TB42 carby auto
What's it got:
ARB non winch bar
2 inch lift
Dual batterys using Redarc solenoid
285/75 16 tyres, Black sunnys (not just for your eyes)
Patroldocta Snorkel
147lt Long Range tank
Prado rear drawers (900mm long)
Cargo barrier
What'll it have:
TD42ti engine, manual transmission
Front locker, 4.3 diff gears Now front and rear lockers and 4.6 gears
35-37 inch tyres
lot's more kms

After sitting around for ever waiting for my compressor to cool down after airing up I bought an ARB to mount in front of my drawers. This is why I used Prado drawers so I could use the space between the rear seats and drawers for bulky tool sets etc instead of taking up the tiny amount of space that Titan drawers give for the amount of room they take up!!

Then I took it away again to Big River before Easter

It wasn't the head, just the clutch fan not locking and have fixed that but am in the process of gathering parts for a TD conversion.
I have bought a motor from an 06 GU TD42Ti including the stock turbo and intercooler and will be converting it to manual

I spent all weekend running around picking up parts for the manual conversion, bought a dash cluster and full loom to suit TD42
Then treated myself to a new (secondhand) bullbar, now I need to buy a winch :(

Bling time
LED headlights, new grille, and indicators
Also picked up an Avenger winch for super cheap, just need to get some winch rope and a new fairlead while I wait for a cheap high mount then this may become a rear winch

Went to Cobaw on the weekend:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/05/140.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/HKpf9B)
My Winch rope didn't turn up on time so bought a cheap Roller fairlead and wired some incab controls just in case, Haha famous last words.
Yep I needed to use it to get out of a bog hole, I need some bigger rubber this winter I think.
Here's some more pics, because everyone loves pics:

Cut the rear quarters off, then realised I didn’t have enough money to buy a rear bar, found this bar for super cheap after putting a post on Facebook. This will do until I save up some more money to get the rear bar I actually want.
I am definitely not a panel beater, so mind the primer. I’ll leave it primed until I get the guards chopped to suit bigger tyres and get it all touched up, was going to do it myself but can’t get the MIG to do anything but burn holes in the thin panels.
Now I have mudflaps again!!!
Then I fitted longer bumpstops front and rear while I had it on the hoist

Brought a front locker, got a hold of a pair of 4.3s and then swapped them for 4.6s so just need to set these lockers up in centres and get them in.
Then I can start on my motor conversion. I’m finally moving house in a couple of weeks so once I drive the car there it will all start.
Plans have slightly changed diff gear and locker wise, so I’ll be going up in tyres to compensate lol

Run into a few problems already, the motor I have is a semi electronic pump with the TCV on the pump, so trying to find a fix for that that doesn’t involve replacing the pump as I would prefer to do the pump when/if I upgrade the turbo
I have removed the EGR system and blocked the manifolds as I don’t require it

Dave are you only changing the front GQ diff housing to the GU or doing both? How do you think it will drive with different wheel widths? I know the Toyotas are a pig to drive on corrugated roads with different front to rear track widths. Also notice the brace kit is on the bottom of the housing - I just fitted mine and its on the top of the GQ diff housing - any idea why they hung your brace on the bottom side of the housing? I am going to brace my rear diff next and to keep max clearance will put it on top also.
Reddave
3rd August 2018, 08:00 AM
Peebee I will be changing the rear diff to a GU housing when I find one for the right price but there isn’t a great deal of difference between GQ and GU rear housings in width maybe 10mm
I had the brace kit put on the bottom, if it goes on the top then you really have to watch your diff to sump clearance on full bump. I’m keeping this really low so wanted as much uptravel as I could

I haven’t ran a measuring tape over the two, but the 20mm a side is definitely in the front, but from what I’ve been told the rear is only 8-10mm in total width

Wasn’t overly difficult just time consuming, marking, taking photos so it all went back together easy.
Got the dash back in, have some wiring repairs to do and some stuff to add into the loom then I can put the rest of it back together. So close to turning the key now

Picked up the car from the auto electrician on Friday, fitted a catch can, checked all the levels and then drove it home!!
Did 200km over the weekend, really happy with it at the moment, could do with more power though!
I’ll put 1,000kms on it, change the oil and filters again and then get it off to be tuned
Reddave
4th September 2018, 09:45 PM
Done 300kms now, filled up with fuel as I thought my gauge wasn’t working. With the long range tank in the fuel gauge starts working as normal once I’ve used about 60 litres, put 47 litres in :)
That means I have fuel economy of around 15 litres per 100km, this conversion will end up paying for itself!!
A far cry from the 40lt/100 the carby got lol
I’ll be booking in for a tune soon, any recommendations on a tuner South east Melbourne? I was going to take it to JPC in Thomastown as they helped me over the phone to set up a Hobbs switch to trick the TI pump but I’ll have to get it towed there due to my work hours (tow truck there and back will cost more than the tune)

Originally, my wife bought the tradie gear set from Patrolapart but they were packaged incorrectly and were not for a GQ. My wife went to Patrolapart and they contacted MSA who sent us a set of their premium covers, fitted them up today. The quality is amazing and they fit unreal.

We headed up the Kimberley in our brand new Patrol and by the time we were half way across the tanami, the whole inside was red, ended up doing the entire 7 weeks with plastic sheet over everything in the rear because the rear door would pop after 10 secs. The service agent in Broome tried to adjust it, but the Gibb Rv Rd and up to Kalumbaru finished it off. Nissan offered me a detail of the car when I got home, and they graciously splashed armoral over the top of everything and well and truly locked the dust in. Complained, deaf ears, wasn't happy. Just a heads up about the weak hinges.

Went on a bit of a spending spree:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/12/33.png (https://ibb.co/SyZngVD)
Brought a high mount off Facebook marketplace, it’s in pretty bad shape but the main bits are there, nothing a rebuild and some new parts can’t fix
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/12/378.jpg (https://ibb.co/gmHxbvb)
So stripped it down to nothing, it’s off to get sandblasted later in the week, then next year I’ll start the rebuild
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/12/379.jpg (https://ibb.co/gtJtKQy)
Brought a UFI fan and hub, this should keep it cool when I give it some more fuel and got the A/c on flat out
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/12/380.jpg (https://ibb.co/3kZwJT5)
And my 18G turned up today, I’ll be running it on my 11mm pump until next year when I buy a 12mm pump and get it tuned, this should wake it up enough for now :tease:

Better to happen now than in the bush I suppose

Went away on a shakedown solo run last weekend, started at Kendal’s campground at Rubicon, cut through to Big River, cooked some burgers and went to bed then headed home Sunday.
Had an annoying rattle start around 150km in :(
Found the exhaust had rattled loose where the front engine pipe bolts on under the gearbox, I’m hoping that it was left loose when my Exhaust guy connected my dump pipe
But apart from that the car was faultless!!
Fitted up some radius spacers, new radius bushes, adjustable front and rear panhard and some longer trailing arms
I’m taking my kids away this weekend trying to fine tune the camping setup and get some reliability sorted before Labour day weekend

Crikey, really nice work Reddave mate, nearly a 50% increase from an already more than beasty 120rwkw drive in and now near double a factory old lazy stocky like ours [emoji23][emoji106]
Do be careful on the go pedal mate, have known a few that have popped running similar/maybe slightly higher figures to yours. One mate up north certainly was a 30++psi boost issue though.
35” tyre dyno figures like yours, especially if they are mud type terrains I believe with added roller friction should equate to well in excess of 200 killer wasps off your flywheel/crank!
Almost identical figures to your 600ishNm torque still going strong towing on the GU family beast MurunnerTD mate?

That's a shame about the clutch mate. I'm not running as much power as you but not far off it. I was in a rush and needed a clutch within a couple of days so I bought a new Exedy safari tuff clutch through Patrolapart, it is holding just fine when towing over 3 tonne of firewood.
But if I had time for a very similar price I would get an NPC Isuzu 6x6 clutch, only thing is it takes a week or two for them to post it to you.

Exedy Safari Tuff HD, UFI Clutch or NPC viper clutch. The first 2 I would recommend lightening the flywheel and balancing the mass. The NPC comes with a nice light flywheel and should be balanced.

Thanks nissannewby
I spoke to Exedy during the week, they rate the heavy duty safari at 800nm at the flywheel which I am exceeding, they say it will hold 1,000nm at the flywheel but I don’t want to do it twice so that ones off the list.
Spoke to Marty at UFI, he rates his clutch at 850nm at the wheels, seeing as everything else is UFI I will be ordering one from them in a couple of weeks.
I have some sneaky mods already planned that I have half paid for that will have to take priority before doing the clutch.
Took her out on the weekend, Noojee, Mt Matlock, Mt Selma, Mt Useful then home through Walhalla, 500kms, loving the power!!

Round 2 of winch bits turned up today, Bow2 motor, genuine Albright, Albright loom, Bus bar kit and extended bolts to mount the Albright on the end of the motor.
Fitted up everything to my top hat tonight, the tops complete, just need two more bits to turn up and I can put the winch together and muscle it into the bar.
The best thing about the bus bars is I just need to add power and earth and the wirings done!!

Bought the bars from Smithi Engineering, Australian company who is the Australian distributor for Gigglepin, they have a couple of different types but won’t suit all motors.
You can find them here: https://smithiengineering.com/collections/winch-motors-power-bars-motor-bolts

Looking good mate. Nice work. With the grill switches, I run them on the passenger side as chances are it is the Navi operating them most of the time and saves them standing right in front of you and obstructing your view. You will find most comp cars run them on the left side too to be honest. They will work fine where they are though.
Can highly recommend adding an LED marker light either hanging under the winch motor or the back of the bar facing back to the winch drum makes seeing the winch at night bloody awesome. I wired it through the winch isolator so it is a double check when I want to make sure do have power to the winch.

Mine did not come with this little clip. It IS REQUIRED! It make something that does this job. If you don't have it the line with spin uncontrollable and self destruct first time. 8 fashioned up something and used zip ties to hold it in position. Doesn't need much but it needs something

Also note, when using your air freespool . You need the navi to give the rope a tug after you re-engage the rope to lock it back in before you press line in.

Hey Darren, I have been thinking about these switches and their location for a couple of days and what troubles me is the location is within what is called the 'line of fire'. The recoil direction is going to head straight back to the anchor point, so understanding the drivers field of view issue, but moving them to the passenger side still retains the hazard. For this reason, I have a cable pendent control with 6m of lead. I know its not as self contained or convenient, but it sure removes the winch operator from the immediate recoil zone, regardless of whether a winch blanket is in use or not. I further understand its impossible to monitor the cable or rope wrap from 6 m away, behind a bar, and this does require frequent 'stop and check actions'. Just a comment, and appreciate they may be in use in comp trucks, but does not mean the risk is reduced or removed. For me, I would not have the switches mounted where they are so close to the winch. Comments welcome of course.

OK, gotcha, that puts my mind at ease. The description suggests the drivers view is obstructed during winching, which is why the controls are on the passenger side.

Peebee, I fitted the switches so I could spool the rope in by myself. When I bought the winch it came without a hand controller, I have wired switches inside the cab next to the steering wheel but needed something to be able to stop constantly walking back and forth from winch to switches to check how much is left etc.
I have no intention of using the switches under load from the outside of the vehicle.

Thanks Dave, appreciate the reply. This 'line of fire' is front and centre with our execution tasks at the mine as two injuries of late from simply operating equipment from what initially looked like a safe position, then finding it the operators were in fact in a hazardous location. One involved a crane lift with a bore pump and the clamp plate slipped. This sent the 400kg pump rocketing to the ground. This is the second incident of the type. The work crews do it frequently, and they were lucky this time to have taken learnings from the previous mishap and had everyone in the crew out of the reaction path.
Love the installation works you have completed so far also, thanks for sharing.

Pretty well what he said mate. The only time they get used is when packing the winch up so the Navi can get it done quickly without the driver, The field of view though is so the drive can still see what else is going on.

You could simply glue strip lighting under the motor near the earth bolt facing down. Simple and easy. wire it to the winch isolator so it is always on when the winch has power.

Less than 5 minutes later I was hanging off the end of my winch rope lol, freespool is amazing and makes a solo winch on flat ground so easy. Then turned around to winch my son out, the GU wanted to use his winch so he came after us and winched out.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/10/13.jpg (https://ibb.co/qYp2CBV)
Then we drove up to the rocky rutted section, got out to have a look and make an assessment to the best way up.
We all got up to the top, I drove straight up, my son had to back up and give it a few goes and the GU straight up. But.....
Started hearing a really bad scrape out of the GU, nursed it to a camping area that ended up being packed so started the climb out over the ridge line. Boost had dropped away completely and EGTs were skyrocketing. So put a strap on and I towed it up to the main road where we had lunch waiting for a tow truck, 3 hours later the big GU was on a tow truck.

Old mate in the GU is testament to that. 4 or 5 Alternators and 3 starter motors later and I am fully over that little activity. Lol not withstanding stripping the inside out to dry out. Lol.
Didnyoy find those pics in My thread mate. Tried hard to embed them here for you mate, sorry.
Cars already dried out, wasn’t in there for long enough for it to be a real issue. If I had a slowmount it would have got really wet inside, my winch is fast now, the bow motor is awesome!
Found the pics! Will be another weekends job!

So removed the wiper arms and got them painted, no more glare driving in the sun now!,
Added a GPS tracker from Steve’s car alarms, bought a reverse camera and got rid of the 28m of 8mm rope and bought some 11mmx45m Whittams rope from Patrolapart
Next week the reverse camera gets fitted, some more wiring done, I’m redoing all my intercooler piping getting rid of the silicone bends, front and rear scrub rails and add my 24v alternator

Awesome Dave mate, you seriously don’t muck around good Bloke!
Way too much 11mm IMHO spooled on there though mate, 1T heavier GU’s get by well with 35m around slimline +76 drums with double the side angle hauling allowances.
GQ wagon mates seem to prefer 10mm awesome ‘Whittams’ for their GVHM :-)
Worth keeping that $350 rope clean, bagged and tagged and we’ll find a perfect win win swapskis soon enough mate [emoji106][emoji106]

Fitted new rear springs to take the weight properly, now it sits properly not sagged in the back, had the old bus weighed to select the right springs. It’s a heavy bus, weighed 2990kgs as it sits.

Two weeks ago went to Cobaw for a night drive, started at Alcorns then did Madman’s, I need bigger tyres as the 35s just didn’t cut it. Dragged myself 15m up madman’s on the winch.

Finally got around to fitting my new clutch, it’s a UFI clutch, fitted a new rear main at the same time.
Found the sandwich plate to be bent and wasn’t sealing allowing mud and crap inside. Probably one f the many reasons it failed in the first place.

Had my 35s for sale and had an offer I couldn’t refuse on the rims as well, so I had to buy new rubber!!
Then had to chop my guards to make them fit, I still need to drop the springs out and set my bump stop heights, then once I know lengths I can order better shocks

Went to Toolangi today, I love these tyres. It’s bittersweet though I sold the motor out of it yesterday, not sure what’s next for it. But will be going back to petrol 🥳
