i had to strip down my winch to find out why it's not working properly. I found this fiber spacer in 2 bits. Does it matter. Photo attached.
The main problem is the winch does not always engage. Just spins. When powered. Or only goes in One Direction.
I cannot attach a photo75006
Could not upload photo by using my phone. Had to use my tablet.
The phone version of the forum does not give the icons for editing.

Third icon from the right in the top of the message box, click that and add the image. Looks like a square with a tree in it

Couple of seperate things going on I reckon. The spinning or driving only in one direction is either solenoid related or the switch on the hand controller is faulty or you have a broken wire - I have had all three over time. The failure to engage sounds like the grease might be hard and the slide spool does not want to move, or you are simply out of mesh with the slider gear to the housing, just jog the winch back and forth. Sounds like a service or open it up to inspect might be the go and replace the grease. Without the photo, only guessing on the washer but could be a crude wiper seal/washer to take up axial movement and try to keep the water out. What make and model is the winch?

Thanks for the info l will do a complete dismantle, and regrease.
I also found a high resistant joint. The earth lead to the winch motor was hot. Cleaned derusted. No more hot motor.

I think the fibre washer looks like a spacer, so as long as its contained within the groove it should be ok. What brand and model of winch - might help others on here with specific knowledge.

The winch is a ridge rider.
