I've just downloaded a couple of maps for Toolangi using MudMap Application on the Iphone. It's a bit fiddly to use. The Iphone screen is just too small I think and I'm a little bit dissapointed you can't zoom out all the way out for an overlook. It would be handy for an emergency but my eyes will burn if trying to use it regularly...

I have an old clunker laptop at home and being looking at Ozi Explorer pack that gives you the following...

Turn your Laptop or Netbook into a navigator !!!
OziExplorer GPS Mapping Software running on your laptop with a USB Mouse GPS Receiver connected showing your current position on a Hema Map from the latest Australian 4WD Raster Map Collection Maps - all you need to get real time tracking operational in your 4WD. (That's OziExplorer + Hema 4WD Map Collection + additional Australia Map + GPS Mouse Receiver (USB) BU-353).

Does anyone have this and can give any feedback?

Can you zoom right in and get track names like the Rooftop ones?

Does it cover all of Australia?

Could you effectively replace your on road GPS with this?

Hi AB. I have had OziExplorer for years and you do not have any limits. The maps can be any paper map that you own and then simply scan in. I use OziExplorer on my desk top all the time to plan trips. The large monitor is convenient and I then save the way points onto a file and put them in the car device.

I used to run a lap top but it is a pain. It is difficult to find somewhere to mount it and there is then a mass of cables to power it and provide a GPS input.

From there I went to a HP PDA which was great - but the screen was a bit small. About 12 months ago I purchased a double din car multimedia system that has all the media gear, a GPS and even a digital TV - ALL BUILT IN !! The beauty of this system is it runs under Windows CE so I just downloaded a copy of OziExplorer for CE and away I went.

It has a seven inch screen and works great. It is easy to switch between the original (street) navigation software and Ozi. You can get these systems starting at about $400.

Try Autoproz on Ebay.

Hope this helps.

Hey mate,

All depends on the maps you use. OziExplorer is just a viewer tool

I've had Ozi explorer running on my laptop before and still have on my 7" in car nav system.
Not sure on the Hema maps but I believe they are 250k:1 maps, so you're not going to get as much info as say 50k:1 maps.
I run old topo 50k:1 maps which are great. You can see every track, every creek, fire trail, names, etc. I think I still have all NSW and Vic Maps (about 10gb worth)

Kris, do the names of the tracks pop up on the topo maps?

No pop-ups like your street maps. Just names of tracks ,creeks, etc on the map itself mate.

Hiya AB...

I've been running Ozi for years also for work and play.

Unlike Tomtom etc which are vector mapping apps Ozi is 'Raster Mapping'.
What the hells that?
Raster mapping is a 'picture' that has been geocoded. You start with the picture called the map image, which can be a pamphlet, topo map, aerial photos, satellite pics, hand drawn sketch indeed anything geographical at all.
OziExplorer is calibrated to the coordinates of the image so you can then get the cordinates of any feature off the piccy.
When a GPS input is added Ozi will automatically move the map to display your position. Ozi doesn't know what is at that spot it just knows that where you are in relation to the map.

So why is that any good? because unlike Tomtom that needs Tomtom formatted data or Igo8 that needs Igo8 maps or Navman that needs Navman maps etc for Oziexplorer if you can see it or scan it it will work.

OziExplorer is so popular now that Hema, Geoscience Australia, UBD, Gregory's etc all supply most or all their products already calibrated for you so its all plug and play just about.

What you see is what was on the original image, nothing more nothin less until you start adding your own pictures and comments onto the map image.

Ozi will work with most mid range or better garmins or magellans or any Mouse or CF card style GPS. The downloads for the Trial versions are free and depending what you want function wise many people don't even have to unlock the Proggy.

G'day guys. Thanks for the post and replies ... I think ... I've spent days surfing, reading, downloading and trying different programs and maps.

AB ... I recon the laptop idea sux. It surprises me to say that as I've let my inner geek free! But it just looks like too much trouble.

NissPat ... I hadn't realised 50k maps were available and would enjoy a set for my ttmpas. Where can I buy them?
