View Full Version : Vibration noise around 1200rpm

Slight vibration sounds like coming from front somewhere. When around 1300rpm decelerating or acclerating in gear in 1st or second mainly.
Only seem to happen since putting 35s on.
Is it drive shaft load or engine mounts?
Anything else I need to look for.
If normal because of extra unsprung weight then Im okay with that too :)
Any other speed and rpm is fine.

Would a worn universal joint do this? Or would a worn one do it constantly?

I'm wondering if its the usual TD groan on low rev's which is like a harmonic vibration that goes through the drive train and yours is now happening because of the bigger tyres perhaps?

Hey AB
Thanks
I have that low rpm 1st and second gear gearbox chatter rattle (gear rollover) before the tyre changeover. I was aware of that being a TD42T thing. (this I can live with as its a TD42t thing lol)
This new one is different. Doesnt last long at all. Definately the vibration rpm because the heatshield that is on the passenger engine mount rattles too.
Im not good at articulating but its not a heavy vibration.
Not light enough to be a rattle

i had a shake in the drive line. changed the clutch gone. turns out the dampening springs were cactus in the clutch plate. i mostly noticed this at low revs low gears.
i wouldn't just assume it was this.

you could be onto something.
Im not slipping but I do think this clutch is on the tail end of its life.

mine didn't slip at all. drove like that for 10 years ... before i got it. only reason i changed it was the thrust bearing failed.. 2 days before last years licola trip....

This is fairly normal with a TD42 ... it is usually a harmonic resonance noise - gearbox chatter, and you will only get it at low revs

I have the gearbox chatter already before the 35 inch. Its like a rattle in 1st and 2nd at low rpm. That I can deal with.
This one is like a vibration like a fast brrrrrrrrrrrrr sound. Doesnt last that long as soon as the rpm increases.
You could be right. Maybe gearbox chatter comes in extra sounds.
To me its like low RPM is where the engine is shaky and it is shaking something?
I could be wrong.
Besides that. Every other rpm and gear car is perfectly fine.
Im sure the extra unsprung weight of the 35s has changed something somewhere lol

Also do we need this heat shield circled It only has one bolt holding it and no matter how I bend it . It still rattles on that low rpm
Seems like its there to keep heat away from the passenger engine mount

The passenger side engine mount cops a beating in the TD42, as the hefty torque is trying to rip that engine mount apart, so I would try to keep the heat shield in if possible, or change the engine mount out for a stronger aftermarket version.....
Most people with the TD42 have had to change out that mount at some stage if they have kept their truck for a little while
My old GQ had a vibration like you describe, and mine ended up being part of the front drivers side A pillar metalwork bracing being cracked ( just like the inner guards do too ), and the harmonic vibration was causing it to vibrate at low speeds.
I only found it by taking the guard off and looking, as the noise was driving me nuts .. I looked for months till I decided to dismantle, but i was fairly sure of the region the noise was eminating from.

drgtr I found this article insightful.

May or may not be your specific problem but could be. garett put new clutch in and solved his prob?
Would help if we (or I) knew exactly what type of clutch is factory standard in TD42T. Anyone know? Mines 2001 Y61 and yes has the gearbox rattle at low revs under load.

Thanks Plasnart
I have the gear roll over gearbox chatter noise on low rpm 1st and 2nd gear before the larger tyres.
So Im aware of that rattle and not fussed by it as its normal for TD42t.
This one is different.
Its like something is hitting the body and chassis rail in a vibration way
I cant feel it through the body or steering wheel.
Reminds me when I had my 200 sx. Same sound. Really fast light vibration.
Ended up being rear diff mount rubbers were shagged. Hitting the underbody. like a BRRRRRRrrrrr sound

I been looking under the car all day. Cant find anything.
Would the rubber part on top of the spring cause the noise if half of it not on the coil spring? Just kinda dangling?

pretty sure the spring mat wouldn't be the cause of this noise, they are pretty cheap and easy to change though.
might be easier if i popped over for a test drive on the week end.

Cheers Mate. Sounds like a plan.
70 percent of the time Its fine
but I think that 30 percent I hit the sweet spot and it does it.

Its definitely the motor vibration making something hitting or making that noise.
Does the engine only vibrate sideways? not back and forth.

Bloody all sorted. My mate found it
Bloody Muffler vibrating against the towbar underneath. When I got under the car I moved the exhaust but clearly didnt move it enough.
He noticed the mark on the muffler and was adamant. We cabled tied it to test and yep. Couldnt get the sound to occur.
So he had modify the hook where the exhaust mounts onto. Ill take a pic tomorrow.
Funnily enough when I moved it by hand to test. I can make it touch the towbar but that was like 12cm worth of movement to even get there.
Vibration and harmonics does move things good lol.
Hopefully the pic and this thread will help others.
Always try the simple things first
