My name is Lisa, my boyfriend and I are looking to buy our first 4*4 to go on a road trip from Brisbane to Perth through the north of Australia, we heard that we should look at patrols only with a 4.2lt engine as the 4cyl/3.0l are supposedly overheating. Just wanted to see if that is true and if so what are the mod we have to look for on this cars that fix the pb (as we are looking for a used patrol).

G'day Lisa and welcome to the forum. Good question that will open up a can of worms. You should get a heap of replys.
So the three ltr 4cyl engine has a largly undeserved reputation for going bang. Search grenade and sit down for a few hours reading. The 4.2 engine has a reputation for being bulletproof, largly deserved. Having said that, the 4.2 is no longer available as a new motor, and as a 3 ltr owner that has 250,000 km on the original motor, I reckon its doing OK. Any motor can overheat, what you have been told is not the issue. So, if you are going to buy an old 4.2 with heaps of k's on it that has been thrashed - good luck with that. If you are going to buy an early 3 ltr with lots of K's - same. If you buy a vehicle that looks as though a bit of care has been taken with it and is under say 300,000 k you should be ok with either motor. You don't say how you are travelling, and probably need o do that in another postn notin the introduction, but if you are towing a heavy trailer or van you may like ti do a little more research. So welcome here and I suggest you post up a few more details in another thread about how you intend to travel with your new vehicle. Also search N.A.D.S. and have a read.
