Hi all,

Ok what is the quickest and easiest way to drain the reserve tank?
Does it have a bung or do I need to undo the transfer hose?

I’ll be back online line in about an hour.

Cheers

16 litres of contaminated fuel (petrol), in there. Hasn’t been started and home on a tilt tray.

If its just petrol, you could siphon as much as possible out, then fill with diesel. Also fill the main with diesel. Then start the car and as you use up fuel put a little from the res into the main and top up the res. A little petrol in the diesel will not hurt the motor and doing it this way should really dilute it. Just top up with diesel as often as possible for a while and it will be OK.

I agree with 4by4 , if your reserve tank has just been topped up with 16 litres it's about a 50-50 mix now so just do as above but make sure reserve is filled with diesel if you haven't already topped it up.

Thanks for the responses, will have a look on Saturday and empty the tank. Being a CRD not game to try diluting the mixture.

Where is the fuel transfer pump located? I've only had a quick look as the car is outsize and the weather here has been crap.

Just crawled under Mrs MB’s 2001 can’t seem to find any drain bung on the 30L stock sub tank Jack mate, unless under the bash plate hidden away! http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/02/117.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/02/118.jpg As AVO kindly mentioned you should be able to transfer pump it mostly out into a jerry/bucket I hope. Our 2001 is located in front of the center cross member behind a steel shield.

Avo, apparently every time you start the car it switches fuel from the sub to main tank, unsure how much so didn’t want to take any risks.
I’ve got RACV totalcare so tow was free, first time I’ve used it in about 20 years, better safe than sorry.

I have had the tanks out there is no drain in them !
I pulled the fuel sender out . Have a good look for rust in the bottom they have a problem with rust .
on the bottom . replaced both of mine . With added drains

Ok all done and easy fix. Found the transfer pump, disconnected the out hose (they are even marked in & out) and ran the pump. Drained the fuel into a container and refilled the reserve tank with diesel. Ran the pump again to drain into main tank, refilled again and drained into main tank.
Was then confident that if there was any petrol left in there is was well and truly diluted. Car started first kick and ran flawlessly on the drive home.
Thanks for the input and advice, great forum.

My first unfortunate experience too some 25+ years ago was roughly 1/2 filling-topping up our old boys 2.4TD beloved Hilux with Leaded local pump change colours:-(
Man those things can BunnyHop good and me too :-)

Good outcome Jack. Cold even perhaps add a touch of 2-stroke to dilute the rest of the Petrol.

Is it bad that I watched my workmate fill up one of our D4D luxes with Unleaded a few years ago, and said nothing!?
I just wanted to see what would happen. It actually chugged along for a while, much longer than i anticipated, before the common rail system chucked a fit....
