I've been watching the various proposals on how the @#%# the Gov't is going to make up the forgone $'s from Fuel Excise as Eleccy Cars become more popular.

At the moment the Gov't Man rips approx 16 Billion Dollars a year (Petrol, Diesel, LPG, Bio,) out of the punters pocket at the bowser in Fuel Excise.
Petrol and Diesel Fuel Excise is just shy of 40 cents a litre, LPG and Bio much less but still significant

Obviously Hybrids only use roughly 50% of fuel compared to a like for like fossil fuel car and Eleccy Cars don't use any.
Considering Hybrids/Eleccys need as good a road infrastructure as Fossils where is the $s going to come from as the Excise $'s drop off?

K's travelled by the vehicle taxed equally no matter the fuel source?
Start raising Fossil Fuel Excise rates to maintain the same $'s (sorta works like a subsidy or incentive to buy eleccy) ?
Just suck it up (HA! Yeah, right as if!!!)

My conspiracy theory tip?
Betcha the Gov't man starts to ratchet up fuel excise within the next 24 to 36 months.
Why?... 'cause the Greenies would go absolutely ballistic if anyone attacks their precious Prius fleet

This is totally a 'non-political' post IE it isn't a function of or aimed at any political party or leadership... well, 'cept maybe them loonie greenie tossers... 'cause no matter who is Canberra they'll soon have a serious amount of money to find.

The greenies dont know their elbow from their arse. "Green Energy" production is huge polluter. It leaves coal to waste from that perspective.
I did just type up a massive rant, but, I've dedecided against it because those mindless knuckledraggers aren't worth my time.

I was in the UK last year and saw an article about this subject, the futurist they interviewed was talking about dropping all fuel excise & introducing a user pays system where all (powered) road users pay per km. I think there will need to be a scale for the mass of the vehicle. It will have to happen, it will be inconvenient & no doubt it will cost us more.
