View Full Version : Monkeybucket III The TD42 project

Gday all,
Just joined up a week ago after buying a new project family wagon...This time I decided to go Nissan as I have always like the old Diesel patrols.
With a little luck Nissans 1990 TD42 GQ Patrol has landed in my driveway for a steal so its off to the research department for me and into the shop for the old girl. It only has 250,000kms on the clock and is in immaculate condition. Everything works except for the Odometer which only just stopped and seems to be a fairly basic fix. Cant find any rust except for on spot that has gone through on the rear top corner. Its only a pin hole that a bit of clever welding will fix.
The chassis is clean and no sign of decay on the front curves under the foot wells...suspension is all original except for the shocks so I will be giving her a rebuild and lift for its 27th Birthday. Found the Cable disconnect for the rear sway bar...First time I have encountered one of these...its all in working order.
I am installing Central locking and a remote immobiliser to give it a bit more appeal as the door locking barrels are a bit worn out so that is now on the cards.
And now for the first pics of the new rig...

Well the old Nissan genuine 15x7 rims are gone to a new home with about 30% tread still on the tyres. They have been replaced with a set of GU 17x8 Alloys wrapped in a set of highly aggressive 32inch highway tyres...lol
I have fitted a full length roof rack to mount the highlift jack and shovel to get me outa hardcore boggy trouble arising from pulling over to answer calls due to the outdated frills free sound system....
MBIII received a Central locking and immobilizer upgrade the other day which is a bit of a gimik for me as its the first time I have ever had it...
The rig now sits on a Tough dog 3 inch 300plus adjustable shock and suspension upgrade that required the replacement of a bent drag link and trailing arm. Must have traversed some high kerbing somewhere along the way...
Will post up an updated pic after a weekend on the sand. Enjoy the long weekend.

Geez Clunk cant a man get some couch time...back to work just to get a break...lol
So we took of to Sandy cape just north of Jurien Bay...The rig did it all with ease...no right foot required for any of it.
In saying that on the highway...MB III doesn't like hills in its current state...head winds on the road home kept us under 90km/h on the 4th cog...Temps stayed fairly normal except when we hit the big long climbs. would creep up to 2/3rds but pretty much just sat around 1/3rd the rest of the drive on the stock temp gauge.
Next stop Tires and a repair the odi.

Bloody boat anchor and the 2 lil bricks can cause me some troubles but eh...at least they dont cost me as much as the 76er does every year...lol
Got me Emu wings in the mail tday...no its not coz of the full moon...they are to replace the two rear windows... Black powdercoated ally flaps...
Just need a good hot day to install n set the sealant...

Spent last weekend under the 76er replacing rear axle housing and swapping all the other crap over on to it should be able to get it on the market soon enough...
Aside from the must dos...Had some time Saturdee and Sundee arvo to complete the Emu wing install on the Patrol...glad I got the old window frame out...they rpretty much fell out...The usual bottom track totally rusted out...luckily no rust or damage to the body of the car.

Heaps better access and not too high even with 3inches under her...You can get any powder coated color and glass is a bit more. Can also get plain ally finish if your gonna respray. took about an hour to do the frames then had to wait a day for em to set. Then another hour n half to fit the hinges and panels. pretty basic install after watching Youtube vids for tips.

Picked up a spare Steering blox today with a secondhand UHF for 120 bucks...Hoping to pick up some extractors and a 2.5inch zorst tmoro as well fo another 100...Holding off on the turbo until I can learn a little more and chat to a few pros about their views on boosting the 4.2 safely.
Got under the bonnet today to check the valve clearances as I am not too sure when it was last done...looks like it is ok...heated it up and followed the book...0.035 seems really tight but it was consistant across the rockers...well the ones I got rocking (dint get it all the way to 6)
Has anyone got any tips on winding the crank over from 1 to 6? I had trouble using the belt from power steering pump...it kept slipping...have to pull the fan and shroud out to do any better.
Gave the rocker cover a good clean out...twas a wee bit goowee.

Took the Slug out to the local up in Mundaring in the rain on the weekend. Here's the Youtube thingy I put together...sound track might be a bit too much for yoll as its part of my 80s music collection...

The closest box is in Bunbury which is 200km from mine so mite see it he will send it up with a mate next time they are down that way...ite even plan a trip down that way next month.

Manage to find a bit of time to clean up the old work lights, scratch up and respray...fitted them on the weekend...still got a pile of other LEDs in the shed from the last rig that need some work and wiring bus etc...I havn't worked out what I'm doing for switches yet...there is a marine panel with reset able fuses that has 4 switches in it...might fit that somewhere for the front. The first switch as on off for the lot and the other three to select the pattern.
Here is the start...enough to light up the track for slow night runs for now...Will get the 40 up on the roof once I work out where the wiring will go.
The steering box is starting to get a lil worse of a leak...lost about 100ml in one trip the other week...will have to swap it out before my trip up to Three Springs. Time to clean up the spare and bolt it in.

Out in the shed a few weeks ago...
knocked up a new extendable rear light stand and spare wheel spacer...pushed the spare out 30mm (not rubbing any more) and got a couple of my cheapo lights bolted on.
pushed the wires through the existing barn door loom sleeve into the cavity...still need to hook it up once the aux lighting loom is complete.
Also fitted the old 40inch up on the roof...still not hooked up for same reason as before.
Been crook for a few weeks n pretty much no brain power for the whole time...starting to come back to life in the last couple of days. Had a CT scan n the doc recons I got fatty legions growing on my thinka...ones about 6mm round...told me not to stress...off to see a specialist next.
Also busted both my tail lights messing around on a night run a couple of weeks ago...one of me mates was legend enough to let me have a set of his...so thats sorted easy enough...think I will be cutting the top out of the bumperettes to stop it from happening again untill the quarters gets chopped n rear barred up.
Still nothing has been done inside the rig...will get to it soon enough.

Headed out with our club... Quaddrive 4wd club...embarked on some exploring of the Marrinup area around Dwellingup WA.
Was keen to check all the changes that had occurred over the years as I had not been back there for at least 8 years.
The weather wasnt the best but I managed to position the rig in a good spot to get a small roast on the fire for the family on day 2.
The place boasts free camp areas and a mountain bike trail straight from the camp grounds...there is a historic POW camp to explore but we didnt gget around to going in.
We managed to get all the rigs sunk in a muddy creek crossing while exploring some older trails, a couple of the others tried to find some iconic trails but couldnt pin point them even with GPS waypoints. We found some cool lil offshoots but only have moving footage of those.
All up a good weekend away with the family.

Long time no show...how is everyone...hope your rigs are safe n sound...I hear ol man fire has been make some acquisitions lately...[emoji24].
Not so serious over ere in the West...in fact we got it good...until the bucket of bolts dropped a bearing in the Gearbox...[emoji2357]
Thought at first I had damaged the diff as the driveline kept locking up when I decelerated...went ahead and pulled the rear end apart and swapped the diff out to find no difference[emoji1787][emoji31] dad suggested we run the box on it's own without the tail shaft and soon we realised we were up for a bit more than some time in the driveway.

We figured one of the bearings had failed in the GB so I set about chasing a donor box to replace what we had.
Soon picked up a stripped roller with a good GB still attached and a pile of other stuff I could flog off later to try get some cash back on the purchase.
Towed the 2 rigs up to me dads workshop...having a hoist makes everything easier...we dropped and cleaned up the donor box...dropped the stuffed box and replaced the main seal while the box was off...cleaned everything up and put it all back together in a weekend...not bad for a couple of armature Patrolers.
Got a visit by Avo and his young blood, our southwest legends. I recon he just wanted to show off the new wheels but we soon put him to work...his new Y62 was quite a nice lil beast...too many buttons for my liking though. Big thanks for the help though.
Chopped up some ding snag that Avo brought up with him and we cracked a few frothies to finish the day.
Got to drive my rig home tday...had to gut the locking hubs as the auto freewheel was jamming up on one side...going back to manual locking hubs me thinks. Found the retaining arms on the locking cog in the hub had sheared off...enough trouble for me to eff them off and go 90s spec.
Also replaced the rear bar a few months back...Will post up a better pic one day...
Catch yall later.

One was seized and the other had lost the ball out of the locking yoke. Salvaged a bearing ball out of an old bike that matched existing and had to grind and file down the center toggle and circlip to get it to turn smooth...must have sustained some damage as the circlip was binding hard with the toggle not allowing it to turn.

Well I been thinking the clutch has been a little heavy since I have had the GQ so I spent some $$ on some spares.
2 new vacuum boosters...one for the clutch and one for me Brakes...
Ended up off work for the second time this month...bloody lung infection this time round...
Anyways...
Pulled the old clutch boosters out tday and replaced it...ended up just using silicone to seal the firewall from the elements.
Seems I have been driving with a faulty clutch booster...the clutch is almost non-existent under foot now...
This is going to need a bit of getting used to...
Have to sort the brake boosters next.
Looks like there is a bit of ruff stuff emerging from the joint above the booster as well that needs a scrub, treatment and re dress too...fun fun fun. What more can you want from an old bucket of bolts...

Been having trouble with the old TJM indicator lights so I gave em the flick...
Found some suitable LED replacements but they needed to be inset for a bit of protection.
Found a sheet of left over ally checker plate in the work ute and some rubber trim so I decided to make up some panels that would fit the new lights.
I think they came up alright...a bit shiny but it will do...now After looking at it for a while, I may have to line the center of the bar as well to match...lol
Also.may have noticed I chopped the hoops and scrubs off the bar...something a bit different...one of these days I will be able to get a custom bar made up how I want to replace it...or I may just make one.
Will be mounting rock lights on the corners one of these days...
Well thats another cheap as chips mod completed...savings will be spent on beer and fuel.

Poor girl hasn't seen the tracks since March...been giving her a run every week but last week I noticed some clean areas on the fromt pumpkin...
Got down and had a look around...looks like a leak from the side of the fuel pump...
The lil inspection plate on the side is letting the fuel out...
Seems to be a common thing around the traps...anyone done the repair? As far as my knowledge bends I need to remove the small plate and replace an O-ring behind it...
Any other info would be a plus...
Cheers

Geez its been a while...couple of trips south to catch up with the usual suspects and a fair bit of work on the donk.
Had to park up the bucket of bolts due to a dicky starter...to many mud baths...had to replace it in the end...also a leak in the timing cover...thankfully the cooling fluid was coming out and not into the oil space.
Replaced the clutch and brake boosters but still I need to sort out the slave...it may be leaking air somewhere. Goes spongey after a bit then need to pop the bleed at the top to reset it every now and then.
New upgraded waterpump as the bearing in the old one shit itself...full clean out and reseal of timing gear cover and cavity.
Upgraded oil pump while I had the cover off...which now keeps the pressure up on idle when hot but had to replace the harmonic balancer due to roughing it up to pop the torque cone to get it off.
Pulled all the injectors...all 6 had cavitation and didn't pass 1200 without leaking or weeing everywhere...pretty sure they are sposed to pass 1450 or so ...snapped the return rail when doing the removal so had to replace it as well.
Retouqued and check all engine components and fixings then a full flush and service pack...
Runs like a proper tractor now...but clean n no leaks.
Was looking forward to running a few trips out this year but due to injury and illness I have been either working my ass off or stuck on the couch all year.
Ah well...such is life eh...
Did catch the crew for a camp out and salmon hunt but wasn't able to catch any...mind you the rest of em recon they caught a pile the next day while I was on my way back home. Just dandy.
Not much more to report except the bucket is just rusting away in the backyard in A1 mechanical condition. Needs some body work and a respray one day.

Had a good time...still need to sort Clunk out for the battery loan.
Got some pics of some dodgy campers while we were there...and one pick of the illusive Ford mariner that Nahnah acquired. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/37.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/38.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/39.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/40.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/41.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/42.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/06/43.jpg

Well its been a while but I decided to pull the rear bar of and give it a spruce up...bit of a rub down, wash and then I used etch primer on the powder coating...topped it with black rust kill gloss...came up alright...just waiting for it to go hard...
Also dropped the trol down on some 33s on steel 16x8 neg 22 D hole rims. Looks a bit different but the NA will enjoy the extra torque when towing.
Poor thing hasn't seen the road since March due to me being ill...looking forward to getting it out again soon. Its almost Xmas and we need a break from suburban crawl.

Decided while I was on a roll to finish off the colour match and coat the ally bar as well...just did a quick scrub and coat job as I want to eventually get a steel tube winch bar made to replace the old flimzee TJM ally one.
Hope to get something more solid on the front before next Xmas...lol...had some pretty shit luck up so far though.
Anywayz...this is how she used to look a few years ago...

Took the Family out to the state forest last weekend. Kids wanted a family only camp out. Sick of waiting for all the inferior 4wd brands and models to catch up to us I guess.
Here is an Amateur film we put together of our weird ass crew out bush.

Update
I was getting a buzzing through the rig from the driveline last weekend after resetting the tappets had me scratching my head until I went to grease the rear uni joints...lol
They were looser than a James Street sex workers backside, so I ordered a pair... Uni joints that is...the others where to expensive.
Well I must say after stripping the tailshaft down I had seen machinery fairing better in people's paddocks.
Rust and mud was holding the diff end.
The top end wasn't too bad but I stripped it out as well.
Pics of the job below. Not one of my favourite jobs but still got it sorted.
