View Full Version : How tall is a Patrol??

Hey guys,

First post (apart from my introduction post) - I'm wondering how tall a standard Patrol with a roof rack fitted is? Is it tall enough that you have to remember not to drive into underground car parks? I assume that once you start looking at lift kits that it becomes more of a potential problem? I know a couple of mates who have written of a bike when driving into a garage or underground carpark while it was attached to their roof rack and was wondering if anybody has had issues with just a roof rack fitted on a Patrol.

Shouldn't have to much is a problem with standard height and wheels..

I'm safe at 2.1m, I think.
That's with 2", 33s and a rack.

Like JaySee, mines at 2.1m or there abouts.
However. I would never ever trust those height warning signs. Especially in a Patrol.
Those sprinkler nodes are just begging to be clipped by a roof rack :)

Also 2.1m here. I do it (@ 2.1m rail limit) but with caution and only via proven routes.

I must say I am always looking and listening but then again I do not run high tire pressures.

I find it very helpful to know that my "big white stick" UHF antenna is 1" taller than my truck height, with nothing on the roof rack. If that fits under a clearance bar, all good. I've found that some people are dyslexic and cant measure very well when it comes to making clearance warning signs.

Like the previous poster, my antenna is pretty much the height of the truck. You can tape a straw or somthing to the top of the antenna if its shorter to make it the correct height. Remember too that car parks at shopping centres have the floor to ceiling height marked and often don't take speed humps into consideration. For the WA blokes, Garden city is a classic where I managed to take out an air conditioning drain pipe with the work truck, which is the same height as the Patrol. All that was required was the front wheels on a speed hump when the bar on the front of the tray, behind the cab, was under the pipe.

I`m at 2.4 meters with the rooftop tent on the GU with the 200 kg constant load springs & not much load. No shopping centers where I live. Don`t eat Maccas, KFC etc, so all good. Got a mark on my HF antenna at 2.4 meters for reference when out on the tracks for any low branches.

Antenna tip is a good one.

I taped a long straight bit of wood to the top of the rack and that's just under my antenna.

The antenna trick is a good idea I never thought of that. I think my GME FM antenna mounted to the bull bar is directly in line with the height of the top-most part of the roof rack.

Few years ago when I had my 3L setup I went to Ikea in Richmond. Undercover parking. I knew the car was 2.1m. And the sign said 2.2m. So i'm like sweet.
I got through the first lot and the heigh doodah... Around 20 metres in, I noticed the ceiling getting lower and lower and then there was some pipes and some sprinkler things.... So lucky I looked out and noticed that there was no way I'll; make it throught.
I was stuck. Looked behind me and there was 6-7 vehicles following me. Oh shit.
Lucky there was a security guard or caretaker or something lingering around and he guided me around and I had to do a 34 turn U turn and get out.
Supposedly hes seen this done that many times and asked the sign to be updated heaps but it never got done.

Which is why I said earlier, never trust the height markings.

If the antenna touches its find reverse and get out of there

snip... Garden city is a classic

Rockingham City is a classic but for a different reason.
A major portion of the Car Parking is completely open air.
On two of the access points there are overhead gantries with horizontal pipes suspended on chains (all the other entries have no gantries).
The pipes act as warnings for a posted 2.2 metre vehicle height restriction.

Given the lowest overhead obstruction is the Moon or an occasional satellite it must be a migratory flight path for endangered Pelicans or somesuch

This one from Armadale S/C. Tall staff have their own entry.

And this from a building we service in the Perth CBD. The building is protected from over height vehicles by the gas pipe.

Thanks for all the responses!! I like the antenna idea - sometimes the simplest solutions are the best :)

I guess that if (when) I end up getting a Patrol it's just something I will have to keep in mind (we have quite a few shopping centres around here that are marked at 2.1 m clearance).
