Hi All, new to forum. I have an 09 CRD Auto and I struggle off road to due no engine braking up or down slopes. I've been told about reduction gears Marks 43 or 85% and rockhoppers but dont know much about the whole thing. Any help as to what the best way to go and what do you auto patrolmen have to deal with the lack of engine braking. Does gearing in diffs make a difference?
Look forward to reading your replys

with low gearing your wheels spin slowly but with immence torque. you have an auto I would go with 85%
Yes diff gearing will have a simmiler effect but.. the lower diff gearing will result in lower top speed and higher rpm at highway speed = worse fuel effieiency. you would change your diff gearing if you chang your tyre size i.e 35" inch tyres to bring the final drive ratio back to standard
Cheers

G'day mate - I just (3 weeks ago) put 85% reduction gears in my auto TB42e and I said it on my members ride, and I'll say it again - the absolute best money I have spent on the rig!!! The gears are awesome and allow a ridiculous amount of control for very steep descents which is normally sadly lacking from autos.
Just about to start watching the Australia test match, so won't be on much tonight, but more than happy to let you know all I learnt when making the decision - shoot me a PM and I'll get to it later tonight no doubt.
Diff gears I haven't touched as yet, but did give it some thought to give the truck a bit more go off the mark, and to hold taller gears when on road - wasn't really considering them for off road work at all, although they would assist.

I recently put marks 43% reduction and love the control I have now, perfectly suited to a manual gearbox and 33-35 inch tyres. Manuals dont suffer as much as the autos when it comes to steep down hills so I got them mainly for steep hill climbs where a fair amount of clutch slip was needed to keep it moving, now it just crawls! Top speed in 1st is about 5 kmh and top speed in 5th is about 50kmh.
If I had an auto, I would defiantly get the 85% reduction.
I took my transfer case out myself (which isnt that hard to do by the way, just get a cheap transmission attachment for your trolley jack) and paid a local transmission workshop $350 to install them.
Along with the locker, its the best upgrade I have done.

You'll be blown away Fletch - simply amazing control once those gears are in and the confidence at the wheel will go through the roof!!
